How Much Does ___ Weigh?

Hey guys/gals, I just got one of those "balance scales".... you know the kind that you see in lawyer's ads and such. (2 bucks at the thrift store, versus $60 for a good one.... I have no money)Anyway, I've done a little research already, a penny weighs 2.5 grams (supposedly), and a nickel weighs 5 grams. 1 ml H2O supposedly weighs 1 gram. WHAT I'D LIKE TO KNOW: Are these measurements are correct? If so, is this for a copper penny, or a post MID-1982 penny (copper AND Zinc) Also, what other household items weigh say 3.5 grams? Any other items weigh useful amounts?

Well, one dollar bill weighs approximently 1 gram. I've used that to balance things out on scales and it works well. As for pennies, I did a little search and found out that they vary in weight each year. According to this site I found a mid 1982 penny should weigh about 3.0577g. You can get a list of penny weights by year at this site: http://www.owlnet.rice.edu/~chem121/lab/pennies/C121Circulated.

I dunno what penny you're talking about, but a british Penny should weigh 3.6 grms. A standard length cigarette usually weighs 3.5 grms. Why not just buy a set of weights, you should be able to get some for virtually nothing at any baking shop.

Thanks potsmokin hippie, its a good thing i checked here first. I would have assumed that a penny weighs just 2.5 grams, and trhat would have lead to a level 5 calculation inadvertently... Level 5's are cool and all, but not if you aren't mentally prepared for one. Phyl- thanks, but i was talking about US currency, i think i'll take a trip to a bake shop and see if they have anything. The area in which i live is rather bleak (not to mention stupid, so stranger items such as cooking weights are probably going to be hard to find. I appreciate all of the comments so far.... you guys RULE!.... LATER!
