Damn, that's a puzzler!
General shape/ proportions/ gill spacing suggests Panaeolus. Bluing suggests "active." But the purple brown spores & partial veil just don't fit with Panaeolus. Would suggest Psilocybe or other Stropharicae but they just don't have that "look."
Maybe PM MJshroomer, if he doesn't reply here. If HE doesn't know, you might have something really odd. Maybe send some spore prints & dried specimens to the nearest university w/ a good mycology dept. & see what they can make of it. Maybe you'll get a new species named after you!

Wow, cool mushrooms. I have no clue what it may be, I've been thumbing through my books looking for a possible candidate, but have found none that come close. I suspect there may be some composted wood in that barn compost, it doesn't look like a coprophilic mushroom to me. I'd be interested in what others have to say about this. Maybe email stamets and see what he thinks, I'm sure he'd be interested to hear about these. Just be very discrete and formal when emailing fungi perfecti.

Your right about them not fitting the "look" of a psilocybe, woodsman. Did these mushrooms have any type of gelatinous pellicle, seperable or otherwise, mitch? Those are some strange mushrooms, just may be a new specie?

I have no idea at all. Are you certain of the bluing? Take a few prints and I'll give it a go.

here with photo enhancement and contrast so you can see the color better there is NO color modification, only brightness and contrast.

Hey Mitch,
Do you think it could be some kind of variation of psilocybe fimetaria or subfimetaria? Seems that one of those species can grow on dung, I can't remember which.

i really dont think so. the caps dont have a separable pellicle. it certainly would be cool if i discovered such a speceis in nova scotia. there are lots of mushrooms that arent often mentioned on the shroomery tho. i reckon its probably one of them. :) like my drawing? :)

Damn good drawing. You have a good eye for details.
I see the bluing in the photos, looks like you got something that'll do the trick. Keep us posted on the potency, if you decide to test'em. It could be a new species, keep looking for more.

I think those are annuals. I found some really weirdies this morning, but what makes you think there isn't a book with that mushroom already in it? I mean, could you have read every book about mushrooms? Certainly not, I'd still like to help, and I think I can.
