Has a Grow Ever Completely Stopped?
    #3443946 - 12/03/04 11:49 PM (12 years, 4 days ago)

I have 3 cakes that have been in the fruiting chamber for 17 days. 73F, 98RH, constant airflow. All cakes cold-shocked, dunked, and rolled in verm. I'm wondering, has anyone ever had a cake that simply never seemed to pin (and therefore not yield at all)? Or is that not possible since it's part of the mushroom's life cycle to EVENTUALLY yield something?

Money, I've heard of some strains that are just bunk and wont pin. Then again, some strains are just really stubborn and slow. Remember the Land Before Time when Spike was the last one to hatch from the egg? Think of it like that.

I haven't experienced anything like a cake that didn't fruit, so maybe it just needs a little time. (I've heard that late pinners usually means big mushrooms)

What are the specs on your fruiting chamber? The more information you give, the more help I can lend.

Some strains won't fruit well as cakes but i'm not sure if that means Won't at all. I had a cake from creeps and it took 2 wks just to start pinning, but the prob. there was a variety of things, i experiented a bit with it and changed the temp. and the humidty a lot and eventually it bloomed beautifully =), Gl and try to change things up a bit, maybe your temp. and see what happens, but my first guess is that they're not warm enough but that temp. is right for growing chamber but some strains differ a bit i've been finding out from exp, So just go with it, Gl

maybe the constant airflow is affecting the humidity,do they look dry?

My fruiting chamber is a Perlite PMP about 2.5ft long, 1.5ft wide, and 1.5ft deep. The temp is around 73F with a constant RH of 98%. Upon inspection the cakes look a little dry so I misted them with water and will continue to do so once daily.
The strain is Cambodian and they were fully colonized from a Karo liquid myc culture within about 10 days. (I inoculated on 10/24) This Sunday will be 3 weeks inside the fruiting chamber without any pinning whatsoever. Is there anything I can try doing?

What is your light schedule. I have basically the same settup and conditions and have been using 12on/12off lighting and just saw my first pins today(day 10). Maybe try light-shocking them with 16hrs of light per day or maybe you could up your temperature to 78ish at the same time. I dunno, just suggestions of what I might do in your situation. Best of luck to ya.

I'm doing the 12 on/12 off right now. And I've tried light-shocking a few times for about 15 hours or so. I'll see if I can find a way to raise my tempurature, but isn't 78F a little high?

I had six pf tek cakes (using the pf strain from Ralphsters) in 98% humidity for nearly five weeks and never got a single pin head. No signs of contamination either, just never pinned. I've had sucess with the same setup since so my only guess is that I waited too long to birth them. Maybe you did the same?

Yeah, 78F is kinda high but if it's been 3 weeks and I still had a stalled cake I'd probably start experimenting with temperature. If it were me I'd probably:

Use 16hrs of 30watt Blue spectrum grow light
Raise the temps to 78F for a few days
maintain 98% RH, remembering to fan often for good 02 exchange

...and pray for the best. I'm not the best at this type of thing but I have been reading constantly on the subject of mycology for 3 months straight. It would seem logical to me that if a tropical strain such as cambodian is having a hard time fruiting that I would want to emulate it's home environment as much as possible in hopes that this would induce pins.

Or you could just try to wait it out a bit longer.

what order do you fan and mist
i've learnt that you have to mist FIRST and then fan for 5 minutes about 4-5 times a day,it cold shocks it,i have had some cakes that didnt seem to want to pin at all too,you could always dunk for 12-24 hours / then roll and rebirth them

how long after it was fully colonized before you dunked it?

around the two week mark....they just kept growing fluffier and fluffier until they pin...if it stalls and starts to dry out with no growth,a dunk and roll is one option or you can crumble it up and spawn to pasturized poo...or make a verm casing
a few choices but no guarantee the greenies won't get you at this stage

There are three things that tell a cake to pin. Light, air exchange, and lack of substrate to colonize. Now I tell people to wait a week after the outside of the cake finishes before they birth the cake the reason is so the center of the cake can finish. Many times people birth the cake before the center finishes and the cake may not pin till this happens.

I waited a week to birth when the outside and bottom was completely colonized.

lamblancer: I don't fan. I have an air pump with two airstones running 24/7 so there's no need to fan. I do, however, mist once a day.

Does anyone know a quick and easy way to raise the temp. in my fruiting chamber a little?
