colonization....grr
    #3442490 - 12/03/04 02:21 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

okay, so the deal is, i have 1 jar out of 9 completely colonized, and 3 others that are seriously 98% colonized, except for just a liitle bit at the bottom of the jars, the problem is, the 3 that are 98% colonized appear to be forming pins now, so i really want to try to go ahead and dunk them overnight and get them in the chamber asap...is it crucial that the jars have to be 100%?

As far as I know YES!

The mycelium protects against contams cause contam need food, when 100% colonized it can not reach the food (the cake) caue the mycelium is on it.

Like an acre full of grass or corn or..., no other plants can grow easy, but every spot of "naked soil" is exploited by the most aggresive growers.
Often not the ones we like...

So dont have naked spots!

You can cut the non colonized parts away with sterile sharp knife if you want.

My 2 cents.

you do run a risk of contamination if they arent 100%, invitro pinning isnt an issue, just allow it to finish colonizing and pinning in the jar, once done
you can finish the flush or harvest it and dunk...

dont remove the uncolonized parts, it can lead to a bigger contamination problem
by exposing more nutrients

gaaaaaaaaah *bangs head against keyboard multiple times* i suppose ive kind of caused this dilemma to myself, as i havent kept the jars as warm as they should be...nothing good comes without patience however...so i guess its safe to suppose that its okay that they are beginning to pin within the jars? it kinda looks like there are mushy warts appearing sporadically throughout the jars...anyhoo...im definitely dunking the 100% colonized cake tonight...i want mushies in my tummy for xmas

you could just bide your time and flip the uncolonized jars to get more air to the bottom via gravity, suction, etc

Does this go for casings too? I have a few jars that were really aggressive because they were in the right spot in my incubator and a few that were a little behind. If the substrate of my casing has some uncolonized rye in there will it contam, or just take a little longer for the myc to knit back up after I break it out of the jars?

You kept looking at them during colonization huh ????
Exposed them to light for to long or frequent , that is most likely why the pre mature pinning occured .

Let 100+5% colonize before birthing , asking for troubles if not .

The grass thing was good analogy ..... open wounds harbor infection if not kept protected , let them fininsh , the invitros won't hurt unless they fully develop and start to rot .
