What do you make of this?

CONCLUSION:

We have reported the case of a fatal poisoning after that a group of people voluntarily consumed hallucinogenic mushrooms. These were fresh Psilocybe semilanceata (Fr. : Fr.) Kummer. The victim had ingested them three times on the same day and exhibited every symptom of a severe poisoning caused by an overdose. Left with no medical care, he died from this poisoning. The so-called innocuousness of hallucinogenic mushrooms is now questioned. A part from common psychic disorders, hallucinogenic mushrooms, like any other drugs, can have deleterious effects caused by an overdose. Thus, the prohibition of harvesting, peddling and sale of mushrooms which are said to be hallucinogenic is justified.

It's a long, but semi-interesting article where they try to blame a man's death on psilocybe mushrooms. I've heard that there were no reported deaths caused by psilocybes, and that most negative intoxications/hospitalizations are a product of improper identifaction of mushrooms, or a bad trip.

Think he died from eating psilocybe semilanceata, or a misidentification?

I bet a misidentification. If magic mushrooms could kill it would be weird that he is the first one every to die from it right

I'm guessing he ate some poison ones mixed with the good ones.

Maybe had a heart attack or something.

Yea, that's why I'm kind of offended that they make a report like that. They were either devout Christian or involved with politics are my thoughts.

This is incorrect. There are several documented deaths caused by overdose from psilocybes, but almost all of them involve toddlers (not hard to overdose on something when you only weigh 8 kilograms). Most reports of adult overdoses are incorrect- caused by misidentification of the mushroom species as a 'magic mushroom' by the authorities when in fact it was something else.

Sorry, thought I had it up there.

I had to find it again, and stumbled upon a copy that the Shroomery already had.

If this is the same incident i've read about (happened in switzerland i believe) the person that died was also extremely drunk and possibly under the influence of other drugs. if not it probably was just misidentification

Yea Twister, he was heavily intoxicated by alcohol, but later in the report it said that they didn't find traces of alcohol in his system.. which leads me to believe that they were either altering the results or the guy who did the writing was heavily influenced by propaganda..

I'm kind of leaning toward that he ate a bunch of psilocybes while he was out there and probably began to trip and accidently ate a poisonous mushroom or two at the same time. Of course alcohol would only obscure his vision and identification abilities even farther...

It's just a shame that one idiot can bring so much flak in the direction of a substance that is more or less harmless when treated with even slight intelligence. None of these reports include the fact that 7,000,000 other people have safely dosed on mushrooms without any physical/mental/DEATH problems. They just focus on the fact that some idiot killed himself and that he had mushrooms in his system.

If in fact it were the mushrooms that killed him, the other four people who dosed with him would have been very ill from the dosing as well.
