A note for Aucklanders
    #3441003 - 12/03/04 06:24 AM (12 years, 5 days ago)

If you live in Auckland, you will have probably noticed the odd weather we have been having lately. It seems to be having a positive effect on mushroom growth.

I currently have 3 different types of mushrooms growing on my lawn alone (the only one I can identify is some kind of panaeolus, probably foenisecii). This inspired me to have a walk through my local golf course.

I found lots of different mushrooms growing, and of more importance to the mushroom addicts (face it, it happens) was the fact that one of my spots (psilocybe subaeruginosa, 3 foot squared, 3 year old pine mulch,  large and highly potent flushes) was covered in fresh mycelium, an odd thing for this time of year.

Growing close by were some fresh Galerina mushrooms, the same species that stopped growing before the subs did.

I doubt that any subs will fruit, but it would be nice

Anyway, if anyone else has noticed this strange occurrence then I'd love to hear about it.

Yeah, I agree. One of my favorite places in the world that I've visited.

I stopped in Auckland and Christchurch in 97 and 98 on my way to and back from Antarctica. New Zealand is probably the most beautiful place I've ever been. I wasn't in to mushroom hunting then; I had my first trip when I got back to the states. I often dream of returning there to go backpacking some day.

Glad to here the shrooms are fruiting down that way.

Is everyone here just really rich, or what? Next time you go on a journey across the world, I'd like to be in the carry-on luggage. Thanks, in advance, for the invitation.

You have to find a job that will pay your way. I'm not rich, I was in the Navy. If i ever get rich maybe I'll invite you on that Packpacking trip.

An update on this post.

First, thanks for all the positive replies. Auckland really is a beautiful place, try the south island for something better.

I went for a trip (using dry mushrooms) out at Woodhill forest on Sunday, I was pleasantly surprised to find a vast amount of mushrooms growing and especially a find of a small Amanita Muscaria var. Formosa under a heavily shaded pine.

If anyone is going to woodhill soon, check out the picnic park past the main bikers car park. Past the BBQ, on the left, under a low pine branch is where you will find it.

There is also an interesting spot 20 minutes past the picnic spot if you go along the biker track, just a plain grass field with mushrooms growing out of what I believe to be horse crap. I couldn't identify the mushroom, but it had interesting characteristics.

There was also a report in the herald about colder then average summer temperatures, hopefully the next season will benefit from this
