U.S out of UN
    #3439606 - 12/02/04 09:50 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

the new congress could adopt Rep. Ron Paul's proposal to completely withdraw from the U.N. Every year this bill has been introduced it has received more and more votes. thanks to kofi this could be the year it gets passed!

The U.S. can still reach out to other nations without the U.N.

you know, i recall the last time the US withdrew from an international organisation called "the League of Nations"... many historians credit this helping start WWII.

I certainly don't support the UN - I think it is a very un-democratic institution that (for the overwhelming majority of instances) supports the status-quo, the domination of the poor by the uber-rich, and the agenda of neo-liberal globalisation...

I'm just saying that we might do well to look at our history books...

This should be a last resort. I don't think the situation is that desperate. The UN is still very open to reforming itself. And despite what many people think, the US still has considerable leverage at the UN. We need to throw our weight behind a very large scale reform; one that would lead to the UN scaling back its more dominant tendencies.

But if the UN continues to try and stretch its power over nations' sovereignty and become less stratified, then yeah, the US should make a slow and very gradual exit.

There will probably always be something akin to the UN. And the US will always want a piece of it... So who knows.

Could that perhaps have to do with the US's power to veto resolutions?

The U.S. only has veto power on the security council(which deals with military and security issues). Several other countries also have a permanent seat on the security council and they also have veto power(China, England, Russia, etc..)

It's doing a piss poor job so far. The "coalition of the willing" was hilarious. They were dragging in the Solomon Islands and the Federated Islands of Micronesia

The US won't drop out of the UN. The UN does nothing the US gov't doesn't want it to, other than make noise. It serves as a fairly toothless gesture of internationalism.

The other permanent member of the UN security council is France.
