casing, misting...

Ok, it's been a week since I cased three of my jars (individually, using 50/50 potting soil, 50/50 sphagnum moss and plain verm) and one of them at least has shown signs of growth. As a tentative plan, I now intend to wait until the surface of each of the casings is well covered with mycelium, then remove the lids from my containers and mist the surface twice a day -- *directly*, with a spray bottle -- to keep it moist. Will this work, or is it just too ghetto? I want to keep things simple (and inconspicuous; I'm in my parents' house), but I also want to keep my hard-won mycelium alive and healthy until that happy day when it finally starts pumping out the shrooms... any advice?

You don?t want the casing totaly covered with mycelium.

yeh the little crevices and valleys and mounds of the casing that the mycellium grows up thru is what provides microcosmic (real word?) moisture, therefore promoting pinning... so don't let it overtake the whole layer!
misting directly is fine.. better to go easy than too much imo so be careful!

Great, thanks. I think I'll only wait until there are small patches of mycelium popping up over much of the surface, or a thin white fuzz covering it, then open the containers, maybe I'll try that refrigerator trick to cold shock them before I open them... I just hope that the temp in my fridge isn't so low as to damage the mycelium. Meanwhile, some sort of green contaminant has appeared on my plain vermiculite casing, which is just too weird, since plain verm can't host contaminants and there was no sign of anything but pure white mycelium on the cake in the jar or after I crumbled it. This stuff popped up snow white and then turned green about a day later... go figure.

Green mold.
> since plain verm can't host contaminants
Who told you that? Any casing material will SUPPORT mold.
It?s not so much mold growing on the casing, but much more on the substrate , then permeating the casing.
If this, namely that vermiculitite doesn?t support contaminants, would be true, then nobody would use anything else.
Mold cantamination begins in the substrate most times and then spreads to casing.
Dump the infested casing. It?s doomed.

Damn, I already replied to this but it didn't get through. The Shroomery seems to be having problems lately. Anyway, by "doomed" did you mean that the green mold is going to take over and kill my mycelium layer before it manages to produce any shrooms, or that it could poison my crop? I had the impression that a fully colonized cake was invulnerable to contams, hence no possibility of contamination with a plain vermiculite casing... but that's clearly not the case :-(

Get that casing away from the others ASAP! If you must try and save the infected one (not recommended) cut the green mold out with a sterile utensil, then spray the infected areas with H2O2. My friend just dumps his anytime there is any sign of contams.

Hmm, I'm wondering: doesn't green mold hate oxygen-rich air? Maybe it'll just shrivel up and die after I open up the container tonight (wishful thinking, yes). Then again the bulk of the fungus is probably growing down in the casing layer where it's damp and stuffy, so I may be screwed. Is this the same stuff as green bread mold? If it is then I don't really need to worry about my shrooms being toxic...
