Reaping the benefits that make bulk worth it
    #3437385 - 12/02/04 12:42 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

I'm looking to do my bulk right and get everything out of it that makes it worth doing and makes it "bulk" growing.

I have 24 QT jars of grain incubating right now. The first batch was 6 popcorn, 6 rye noc'd with spores. The second 12 was all rye noc'd 4 days later with honey. They are all on even pace (cept the popcorn is a wee bit behind), and about 50% colonized, no contams.

I don't have the exact calculations on hand, but I figured that I'd need 18 QT to maintain a 25% spawn to bulk ratio across my square footage 6" deep. I'm hoping to get that out of my 24 QT jars.

I'm looking to do 2 parts straw, 4 parts poo, 1 part verm for my bulk mix, again, at 6". I'm casing at a full 2" 50/50+, cause I'ma try and pull it through 3 flushes. I'm casing them straight to the bottom of 2 x 30 gal tubs. I'll patch once or twice then I'm going to cold shock em in my bathtub. I really wanna see how even I can get the pinset, seems like a nice lil art in itself.

I'm gonna have the 2 tubs ran by a single cool mist and single ultra sonic on a timer. I'll still mist my casing with H2O2 cause I hear it's hard to pull many flushes outta bulk. Do I even need the ultra sonic too for bulk casings?

Does this sound like I am reaping the benefits? What else should I be lookin to do?

you definetly sound like you've picked up all the info that I've. I've done 2 bulks. 1 contamed, one is still incubating and looking good ( a little long though, but all healthy) Do you have a hygrometer? That cool mist might drop the humidity a bit below ideal w/o the ultra sonic.

What are you saying about you need 18QT blablabla? How many quart jars are you spawning into how much bulk?

Well I have 5 square feet at 6 inches deep. That's 2.5 cubic feet, go inches to cm, one liter is 1000 cc, 2.54 liter or something is 1 gallon, 1 gallon is 4 quarts. I did the math and it would take 18 QT to maintain 25% spawn to bulk ratio for 5 square feet at 6" deep of substrate.

Am I going too big? I'm looking for an oz dry per square foot over 3 flushes.

go big or go home. What you're doing sounds great. Are you going to layer or just mix it?

Well, I was initially trained, lol what I first read, was to layer the spawn and bulk, even though at that time it seemed counter intuitive. I'm just going to mix it in. More spawn points and you gotta think overall faster colonization, plus I can't help but think a consistency in your substrate can't do anything but help. And on top of that, it doesn't even really matter if you apply your casing layer post-100% colonization.

How were your yields on your previous bulk grow?

stamets says you get a pound wet per sqaure foot, but i dont remember the substrate depth and stuff.

So about 1.5 oz per square foot according to the master? I doubt I could get an oz then, hrmm.

i still think its possible man. Set your goal for an even pinset.

Yea I'll stick with the two tubs then. I read somewhere that you could get 3-6 oz dry per square foot, but that seems kinda ridiculous.

Damn, mag just told me I should look for 18 oz dry out of that setup.
That's too much lol

What are the optimum P. cubensis growth parameters?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Psilocybe cubensis Growth Parameters
taken from

Paul Stamets and J. S. Chilton: The Mushroom Cultivator
If you want more information (and there is plenty!), go buy the book

Mycelial Types: Rhizomorphic to linear; whitish in overall color but often bruising bluish where injured.
Standard Spawn Medium: Rye grain. See Chapter III.
Fruiting Substrate: Rye grain; wheat straw; leached horse or cow manure and/or horse manure/straw compost balanced to a 71-74% moisture content.
Method of Preparation: See Chapters III, V, and VI. Pasteurization achieved through exposure to live steam for 2 hours at 140?F. throughout the substrate. Straw or compost should be filled to a depth of 6-12 inches. Straw should be spawned at a rate of 2 cups/sq. ft.

Spawn Run:
Relative Humidity: 90%.
Substrate Temperature: 84?F - 86?F. Thermal death limits have been established at 106?F.
Duration: 10-14 days.
CO2: 5000 - 10,000 ppm.
Fresh Air Exchanges: 0 per hour.
Type of Casing: After fully run, cover with the standard casing whose preparations described in Chapter VIII. Layer to a depth of 1-2 inches. The casing should be balanced to an initial pH of 6.8 - 7.2.

Post Casing/Prepinning:
Relative Humidity: 90 %. Substrate Temperature: 84 - 86?F.
Duration of Case Run: 5-10 days.
CO2: 5000-10,000 ppm.
Fresh Air Exchanges: 0 per hour.
Light: Incubation in total darkness.

Primordia Formation:
Relative Humidity: 95-100%.
Air Temperature: 74-78 ?F.
Duration: 6-10 days.
CO2: less than 5000 ppm.
Fresh Air Exchanges: 1 -3 per hour. (For practical purposes, fanning a terrarium 2-3 times a day is sufficient)
Light: Diffuse natural or exposure for 12-16 hours/day of grow-lux type fluorescent light high in blue spectra at the 480 nanometer wavelength. (See Chapters IV and IX).

Cropping:
Relative Humidity: 85-92%. (For cakes: 95-100% )
Air Temperature: 74-78 ?F.
CO2 : less than 5000 ppm.
Fresh Air Exchanges: 1 -3 per hour. (For practical purposes, fanning a terrarium 2-3 times a day is sufficient)
Flushing Pattern: Every 5-8 days.
Harvest Stage: When the cap becomes convex and soon after the partial veil ruptures.
Light: Indirect natural or same as above.

Yield Potential: Average yields are 2-4 Ibs. /sq. ft. over a 5 week cropping period. Maximum yield potential has not been established.

Moisture Content of Mushrooms: 92% water; 8% dry matter.

Nutritional Content: Not yet established.

sorry, i looked it up, its way more than i thought.
