Darkness vc Incubation
    #3436692 - 12/02/04 12:01 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Hello

I experience slow myc growth in my jars. Thinking of some causes.

I have the feeling that the tubs are not really lightproof, they are light green plastic with a towel around but still not dark.

WHat is influence on myc growth when the darkness is not 100% but lets say 65-75 %?

I think that you should suspect low water content first. How is that going? Then next I would suspect temperatures, how is that going?

Yeah next to temperature, i'd say that light does have a profound affect on how fast the myc grows. Try putting them in a dark closet or something and peak on them every 4 or so days. It's hard but i've noticed a great difference in colonization speed when i've looked at them much less.

Theres your problem. The cakes are shy, let them be and they'll grow faster.

I don't want to be a bone head but; The PF tek says to store in indirect light following inoculation. Has everyone here decided that this is just plain wrong? Just asking.

Anyone can tell which impact a not complete dark incubator has on spore germination/mycelium growth?

My guess, outta mere common sense, would be that it slows the myc growth cause it sends that myc which is exposed into a different process of development.

The PF Tek is great, but just as you, I've noticed a couple things in it that are a major contradiction to what everyone on the shroomery does.

Ok folks, I dont wanna be impatient but since my TIT lacks a good lid, which causes warm air to slip out and moist to get in, and since it is not 100% dark I will go out and buy some tubs which are dark inside and have a lid.

BUT still I am interested in the impact on germination/myc growth when its not totally dark in the incubator.

Thank you.

It doesn't have to be 100% dark to be quite honest, people on here Bitch and yell at each other for trying to disprove one of them to be wrong and the other right. In My experiences, Total darkness, good temp. and looking at them less has gotten me quick results. My brf cakes usually colonies in 3 wks and my wbs colonizes about 7 usually, sometimes 8. From what i've read that's pretty fast compared to the normal which is 4-6 wks for brf and 8-10 days for wbs. Try to adjust the temps. next time and look at them less and see if they grow quicker.

And just so you know, here's why I base my ideas on what i do to my jars. Mycelium stops growing when light is introduced b/c the light tells it when and where to grow mushrooms (premodora?), so that Alone tells me that i should keep them in perfect darkness and look at them every now and then. When you cold dunk you do it b/c it tells the cake to go in survival mode and it halts myc. growth to almost a stop and then it's said to pin quicker then. So that's why i keep my temp. up a bit But not to high b/c too much heat will cause the myc. to either die or slow down, I've had best results between 78-82F. Gl and hopefully people won't give you shit advice that leads you no where.lol. Well i hope your grow, Grows!

No you have been helping and triggering things with your post.
The temp is somewhat unstable and some days I look like 3 times also to check on temps but yehheyeyh wanna see mycoporn ofcourse!

I really wanna switch to other tubs for darker darkness  and more stabile temp. Now it is between 27-30 which must be fine....

Now its been six days and from my GT syringe no colonisation, not in Rye jars, not in PF jar, not in karo. :frown:

But rye might be too dry in one or 2 jars the karo definately is not and the pf jar is fine. But I heared GT can be slow starter in germination and then take off fast once it starts.

Ill hope for the best and I thank you for your goodness.

Its probably your heat then if thats fluxuating. For my first grow I did GTs and I also found for them to be slow colonizers. But from what I understand rye jars using most strains will show atleast some sign of growth in 6 days. How did you sterilize the jars? Perhaps there is some contam?

As i understand it(correct me if i'm wrong) is that the light is an environmental trigger to stop the myc growth to start producing the mushrooms. This would seem counter-intuitive to the jar colonizing quickly. It shouldn't be real hard at all to darken the tub, and you'll see alot of growth real quick.

GL.

environment is combination of less optimum factors:
- not 100% dark
- temp bit fluctuating (me watching)
- first batch I did not shake syringe and used PF formula with too much verm IMHO

We will fucking see what happens!

Fact is light is a pinning trigger and can certainly help some strains pin and others pin more prolifically. Just wrap your jars a foil and benefit from proven experience, remember pros use everything they can to optimize their grows especially if it's as easy as a foil wrap  although most pros don't do cakes   GL

Actually in nature myc doesn't grow in exposed light FYI but look under a piece of wood or cardboard and such and you will many times see myc growth. Also when myc reaches the surface and IS exposed to light along with being in an environment conducive to mushroom formation it will most definitely fruit.

Hey Hey Hyphae!

Thanks, and what if the light is between darkness and light, will it slow down growth? the myc I have isnt pinning or something. Im just looking for answers why things dont take of so fast.

I believe that the strains I use have been only used on BRG the last years. ANd I heard that thestrain can get used to the substrate making it harder to grwo on other substrates after it has been cultivatedon one single kind of substrate for years after years.

Do you have any comments on that?
