ok i'll do my best to give as much info as i know

the cap is about 2.5cm wide with a large split in the middle

it was found at the base of a eucalypt and they were growing right out of tree at the base.

the cap is dry and smooth
it's a very strong hard fungi took a bit to get it out of the tree base

the gills are a pale orange/yellow colour

here is a pic of one half

this fungi was also growing on the same tree at the base also

i'm new to this so i hope i've put a bit more info up there for everyone. i've spent hours trying to match it up with descriptions from other sites but no luck.

Your biggest problem with identifying those is that they look to be very immature mushrooms. Very young mushrooms often lack features they develop in maturity that allow easy identification.

See if you can get a spore print.

Happy mushrooming!

Hello Melb man,

I have also just found this forum (I am from the Hunter Valley NSW Australia), and I am also relatively new to the fascinating world of fungi.

I can't help you at the moment with your ID but I have been busy since the rain here a few weeks ago trying to ID some species that I have observed. We may be able to assist each other in our interest from time to time.

Cheers
