Very interesting indeed. I was starting to dig what he was saying until I came up this very unsettling passage:
"If we had never done anything violent and had submitted the present writings to a publisher, they probably would not have been accepted. If they had been accepted and published, they probably would not have attracted many readers, because it's more fun to watch the entertainment put out by the media than to read a sober essay. Even if these writings had had many readers, most of these readers would soon have forgotten what they had read as their minds were flooded by the mass of material to which the media expose them. In order to get our message before the public with some chance of making a lasting impression, we've had to kill people."
-------------------- 1. "After an hour I wasn't feeling anything so I decided to take another..." 2. "We were feeling pretty good so we decided to smoke a few bowls..." 3. "I had to be real quiet because my parents were asleep upstairs..."

i disagree there - i think any message that he had was definitely lost - at least to the mass american public - by the fact that he was the "Unabomber" . He will certainly be remembered, but I highly doubt that his ideology made much of an impact on anybody. I'm slowly reading my way through this - keep getting distracted - but it is an interesting read so far. I have major disagreements already (i've only read "the psychology of leftists") but i'll keep a'reading and post any comments...

That is precisely why it is unsettling.

I'm really glad I read this. (sorry for bumping another old thread, but why make a new one?)
His points make sense..... if humans had no emotion. He has completely taken emotion, adaption, and actual human nature out of the picture and focuses on paranoid sweeping generalizations.
Of course some of the things he mentions are of concern (environmental overhaul, depersonalization of communities, increasing loss of freedoms) but hopefully we can work towards fixing those things peacefully. Do we really need to kill thousands of people, and blow up power plants? I don't see how that would ever have worked anyway. And there is no point, because technology has brought about lots of good whether you admit it or not. I'm optimistic we can greatly reduce the "negative externalities" by getting together and working on it.
I just can't see where he gets off calling everything a surrogate activity and therefore worthless. Sure, bodybuilding for example is pretty useless in the long run. But it's fun! There's nothing like hitting new maxes and performing at your best all the time. Same with golf. He emphasizes how we need to strengthen our communities, but isn't that what golf does (ignoring land destruction, and competitive assholes)? Whenever I played golf it was just hanging out with some good old friends enjoying a nice day. We didn't all just stand around and mindlessly hit the ball until it went into the hole.

Industrial society will either destroy itself utterly, or arrive at a sustainable dystopia a la Brave New World.
