I have a 55 gallon glass aquarium that i plan on using for a fruiting chamber and im looking to add a plexiglass lid... 1) can i just drill holes in the plexiglass (and fill with Polyfil for air exchange)? If not, how do i put the hoses for the PMP setup? Any other suggestions with setting up an actual aquarium/terrarium...

make the plexi glass lid, and drill holes in it to run the small air hose through, 1/8 drill bit will work.

im gonna build one out of a 40 gallon breeder tank, it is short and fat, more ground space than a 55 gal standard.

my terrarium's lid was a screen, I used durable see-thru garbage bag, and have no air exchange.

55 gallon and 12 cakes? What measures does it have? I presume there can be more cakes in there. I think you can make holes in the plexiglass, you can try a red hot nail maybe instead to make em with.
good luck

a wtf, both even numbers!
There probably fit more then 20 cakes in there as long as the aquarium isnt too high..
My rubbermaid which is 1,3 foot (40 cm)* 2,3 foot (80 cm) has room for 20 cakes already. And then I measure every cake is 2 inch at the bottom, and there is 2 inch between each cake!

the 50 gall. aquarium is same diamater as 20 gall. just higher, you could make 2 levels of cake storage if you are a crafte ninja.

Yeah if the surface is the same then that would be so, but Im curious to the measurememts/size of the aquarium, I think it is longer than 2,6 and wider then 1,3. To say I think he has more surface area then my 20 cake (30 gallon) rubbermaid.

Do not use plexi ... it will warp after only a couple of days exposure to high humidity enviro that mushies grow in . LEXAN is the way to go , and yes you can drill holes in it just fine to attatch fittings and a handle . At the pet store they have little tubing sized fittings for attaching fish pump sized tubing , then use 5 min epoxy to secure them in place . Home depot for a cheap drawer handle , sure makes opening it easier .

The clamps ... because I used plexi the last time LEXAN is now in place on 3 tanks and no clamps .I wish you could zoom in to see the little fittings I used .I need to take some new pics and show the detail . Good Luck

Trust me ... IT WILL WARP . Lexan cost a few more dollars but will last a lot longer , and give a better seal . Like I said, before I knew any better I used plexi and had to use "c" clamps to keep the damn thing closed .
Yes it is a gun ... of sorts... a lighter\pipe .

I find that when drilling plastics or plexi-glass that there is no splintering if you first put some masking tape where you wanna drill at!! Works great

Might check for a plastics retailer where you live. We use one locally all the time to get supplies at work. They carry all kinds of plastic, cut it, drill it, glue it etc... Just draw what you want on paper and they can bust it out in a few minutes.

The only problem I had was the lexan is bullet proof(is what banks use only 4 inches thick) , so had to use a real sharp drill bit and no other glues hold real good on it other than epoxy . The plastic melted to the drill bit due to making cut slowly had to use a razor knife to scrape it off between drillings . I love my dremel ! I had Home Depot guy cut it to size so drilling for fittings was the only thing I had to do . Make measurements about 1\16 of an inch smaller in all directions so it fits snug but not so tight you must fight with .
