**Spore Syringe Size Question ** 1/2 cc short needle ok??
    #3424428 - 11/29/04 06:24 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

This is my first time attempting to make a spore syringe. I am using spore prints that i have made myself. I just bought a box of 100 count 1/2 cc short needles at the pharmacy store. All the teks that I have read say I need a 10 cc long needle. What are the negatives to using 1/2 cc short needles compared to a 10 cc long needle? Do I have to use a 10 cc long needle or do you think a 1/2 cc short needle will suffice?

it doesn't matter. The only difference is amount of spore solution per syringe.

what are you talking about 10cc long needle? 1/2 cc short needle. cc are a volume. needles deal with size and guage. you need at least an 18 guage needle and it needs to be 1 1/2 in. long. i hope i am just misreading this.

I too was confused because cc is a measure of volume, I'm sure he just meant volume and confused needle with syringe. I'm making an assumption with this, so I may be wrong.

The negatives to a 1/2cc short needle is that it doesn't hold a lot of solution, ie 1/2 a cc to be exact. That means you need 20 needles worth to make the same amount of solution as a 10cc syringe you would get from a sponsor.
The syringes you got probably have short like 3/4" needles in a very thin gauge.
Short needles won't get you past the verm layer if you are making brf cakes. A thin gauge needle means it is more prone to clog if the spores have started growing, or if you are trying to make a myc syringe.

1/2 cc is referring to volume of the syringe. the needle of the syringe is only about 1/2 inch long. I took some spore prints that I prepared myself and I've made 20 syringes so far, totaling 10 cc. Yes, I am making brown rice flour cakes. I was thinking maybe I could just put in 1/4 inch of vermiculite on top of cake mixture. This is my first time, so i'm trying to do everything right. The largest syringe that I could find so far is 1 cc. Do you think they might have syringes for sale at a pet store or something?

i think 1/2cc is the volume of the syringe, dude that's gonna suck, yull have to make one syringe for each inoculation hole roflez.

You can pick the big syringes up online pretty easily...at a vet store, or a feed store, they're animal syringes.

what guage is that 1/2" needle. i can make a safe bet its no bigger than 22g. you can run into problaems with clumped spores with that size of guage

What happens if you get clumped spores? None of the spores will come out of the syringe? The needle is actually 5/16 inch long i just checked the box and its 31 gauge. Basically I feel like I spent $25 on something that I don't need. Right? Are there any special contamination problems i might run into with clumped spores?

if u read the above post 31 gauge is really too small.

if u get clumped spores there is no increase to the contam factor. they just wont come out of the needle

Sounds like mycelium is growing. That's not bad but if it gets really thick then you're certainly going to have trouble getting it out and that sucks. I've heard it helps colonize jars quicker because it's already germinated but if it's contaminated and growing in there, then you might have a real problem. What color are the "clumps"?

Wow, ears are gauged normally at 18 or 24, You've got a 31 gauge? Usually the don't use odd numbers but that's really really small. I just realized how tiny that is, you might either want to throw it out (the solution inside) or you might want to take it out and just break it up and dilude it with more water but that idea has a big contam. factor and it probably wouldn't work, lol. Well maybe you could put it into a liquid cult. and then take some solution from that and use it? Gl

thats really too small. 1/2cc's are for diabetics and humans, and a about 9 1/2 ccs shy of being practical. 31 guage are for small animals and humans as well, 18 guage and lower is really for animals. 1/2" is way to short. ryvmed has damn good deals on syringes.. 20cc are nice because you can do more jars with one syringe. Don't mind the stuff that says won't ship to 15 states. if you are ordering 18 guage its not like you should shoot drugs with it, and they'll send it. At least, i'm in one of those 15 states and i get syringes from there.
