Thickening cool mist
    #3419629 - 11/28/04 03:19 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

I do know that if you put a teaspoon of salt or baking soda in a vaporizer the steam will be a lot thicker thus making much more humidity.

For my new setup I have one of those 2-tier indoor greenhouse shelving thingies with a Duracraft cool mist humidifier going straight into it just like a Martha. However, I can only get the humidity up to 83% in there, I think because I do not yet have enough plastic to properly seal up the bottom, or this humidifier just sucks.

What I want to know is there anything that can be added to the water in a cool mist to increase mist output like you can with steam?

With such a badass setup you should just invest in an ultra sonic.
I found a 1/2 gal reservoir ultrasonic at Big Lots for $13, the larger size of which is $35, it's Holmes brand I believe. Suck it up.

I don't see why this guy don't cut it, 2 gallon and I have a tube going into the chamber that has 1 1/2" diameter.

Cool mists often lower the humidity due to all the fresh air, that is their main purpose, not humidity. Ultrasonics are for maintaining high humidity.

And keep in mind about 95% of hygrometers are inaccurate over 80%. Its quite possible this is the culprit.

Wouldn't putting stuff in the water gum up the ultrasonic's works?

Well, warmer air holds more water than cooler air. If you put a fishtank heater in your coolmist's resevoir (secured so it doesn't hit the spindle) you will have fog like nobody's business.

To increase humidity and decrease the air pressure it's pushing, I run my garden hoses to a 2L bottle, and then to the grow chambers. A gallon jug or small sterilite tub (maybe with some perlite in it) would also work well.

These things can pump out *plenty* of humidity, no doubt about it.

And yeah, you gotta more or less seal the bottom to keep rH up. I duct taped a drop cloth underneath mine, and loaded it up with 1/2" of perlite too, just in case.

I duct taped a garbage bag to the bottom and taped the vinyl good, seems to be as good as I will be able to get it.

I was just thinking of putting a nice tray of perlite on the bottom rack, I bet I could get atleast another 10% humidity with that.

I like the heater in the humidifier idea also. What temp does the water have to be to produce fog?

An ultra sonic should be all the humidity you need. If you aren't getting it with that, you probably have 1 of 2 problems.
1) your meter is reading wrong, like scat previously mentioned
2) your ultra sonic is broken

I don't have an ultrasonic, although I'm thinking of picking one up at big lots like you mentioned. If i had cool mist and ultrasonic I think that will be perfect since that's how Magash recommends to do it anyway.

The cool mist on low power the humidity is just the same as on high, so I'm thinking of I get the ultrasonic and put them both on the same timer I will be good.

Some say seal bottom, others not, which is it?

>Some say seal bottom, others not, which is it?

that bag isnt making things airtight, so it doesnt really matter on or off i suppose. although for good measure i would just take it off, it might inhibit good air circulation and there sure as shit isnt any reason to have it taped on there.

has me a mini martha set up i have a sealed container 2.6 gallon,my ultra sonic feeds into a t valve on top then other end has a cool mist line. my ultra pumps out a thick mist at first but turns into a clearer mist after a minute. trying to figure out how i can keep from over saturating my casings.maybe a foil with plastic lid with holes like maybe tiny 1's?.. needle size .. running a timer isa option also so many choices to choose from.

cant really picture your setup, but if you put the ultrasonic hose directly above the coolmist hose it will diffuse the moisture into the cool mist's air, so you wont have super saturated ultrasonic mists floating right down to your casings.

i have a coolmist + USH set-up and shooting the air flows of each at one another doesnt really do much. it does spread about the thick ush flow some, but it definitly doesnt effect the supersaturatedness of the air. and casings would still get soaked. i recommend a long hose from the ush to the chamber, or some type of bottle diffuser that mixes up the air real good with lots of surface area for big water particles to stick to.

not shooting them at each other, placing the ultrasonic above the coolmist in parallel.

If you can hold humidity with an open bottom, go for it. It's really a YMMV thing. I sealed the bottom of mine because the humidity simply wasn't there without it, poked some polyfil holes, and fan once or twice a day if I feel like it.
