steralized straw
    #3429223 - 11/30/04 08:05 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I have 3 liters of sterilized straw and 6 quarts of colonized millet. My plan was to get a Rubbermaid, layer straw, then spawn, let it colonize, and case. Since I didn't pasteurize the straw will this work or should I try to colonize it differently? I was thinking of adding a second tub with water and a heater to help speed up the process.

i wouldnt waste my spawn on sterilized straw, you have a good chance it will contam, pasteurize some straw, and spawn that would be your best bet imo.

good luck.

why would you sterilize straw wouldn't it be easier to pasturize. at 10 psi how long should i cook my poo straw? at 15 psi i thought i read 90 minutes..so maybe add 30 minutes make it 2 hours on a low heat

also i know no to let the temps get above 170 180 degrees

and while your pasteurizing that straw, toss in a few well aged horse turds. You won't be sorry.

can you pretty much put cow straw in any kinda rectangle container so that the depth of the spawn be reasonable.? thinking on a aluminum cake baking pan with plastic lid?

Don't PC your straw. Put it in a bag (pillow case works well) and submerge it in a pot of 165F - 170F water for about an hour.

Yeah, that container would work provided it has a depth of 3 inches or greater. A thick bulk substrate gives nicer flushes, to a point. I would not exceed 8 inches.
