Casings - Second Flush coming - Mist or what?
    #3426917 - 11/30/04 08:59 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Ok, so I've moved up to casings and have had some decent amounts of mushrooms from my first flushes.

Anyway, it's now time to prepare for a second flush and I have read that I'm supposed to continue my misting during this time after repairing the casing layer. So I repaired the casing layer and am finding myself unsure as to how moist I should get this biotch.

Just a few nice fine mist shots like when I first birthed this, or should I give it a nice rainforest misting to replenish all the water that's missing from the first flush. I pulled nearly 1/2 oz dried off each casing (each contained 4 1/2 pint cakes).

I guess I'm just wanting a run down of what some of you do after your casing has flushed. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Im at the exact same phase as you right now. I misted lightly and threw them back into the martha. Since I have an ultrasonic, I ran it double time for the first 24 hours. 1 1/2 hours off, 1/2 hour on.
Then back to the normal cycle.

Big casings are so tight, mine are about the size of yours, 2 Qts a peice, and Ive gotten some awsome fruits off the first flushes. On average 32g dry.

Heres a pic

I think just misting it a little is alright, but Im gonna try dunking one of the casings to see what happens. You should do it also and we can compare notes. Mine are Gts.

Good luck man

You'll want to mist the casing bringing them up to optimum moisture ("near saturation") over several light mistings in the next few days.

I dunked mine last few times. They've been absolutely sopping wet going back in the chamber. Then I don't mist at all, a little extra casing layer and as the myc fluffs back up - the moisture is soaked up. Probably very lazy of me.. but relatively hassle free and not proving a massive contam farm as yet. My 3rd flush was rather good, and the fourth is underway. I didn't get that far misting.. Not saying it can't be done, I wouldn't know since I obviously borked it first time, but for simplicities sake its working for me.

When there is JUST enough water before saturation, little beeds of water will rest on top (stop when you see this)

When it is dry, you will notice that the casing layer is starting to pull away from the sides of your tray/container.

Easy.

I've personally went 8 flushes a few time 5-6 is average for me with misting. Optimally you want to almost saturate the casing layer without puddling or "runoff" the casing will "glisten" with moisture this is the controlled way of doing it  I personally never dunk casings ever like many of the top growers it simply isn't necessary IF you manage your casings moisture levels properly. Now many simply don't have or make the time to maintain their casings so those peeps may definitely benefit from dunking but I also definitely see potential problems with dunking a casings casing. Hambo adding a little absorbant casing I'm sure helps his situation and I've seen flooded casing produce an awesome flush once it recovered but eventually I'd think it would come back around and bite ya in the ass sooner or later
