dreams of closets full of mycelium...
anyone ever sterilize those disposable plastic tupperware containers? anti-microbial UV light rays? antibacterial wash, alcohol rub? heat and pressure sterilization? any of the above?

I suppose it all depends on the brand of disposable plastic tupperware container. I know that some are microwavable and heat resistant and some aren't.. if anyone knows some brand names they could help this person out with that'd be great.
All that comes to mind right now is Gladware,

Ziplock 1 cup containers have worked for me in a pressure cooker (growing edibles). They don't deform, but after 5 cycles through the PC the lid becomes loose.

I could never get them to work right, although I tried the larger square containers (4 cup I think).
When PC'd it would create a vacuum and suck in air and always end up contaming the substrate, I've had only one work out for me. They would deform really bad too and I had the same problem with the lids.

They won't melt in a PC if they are Polly propolene. look for a little triangle on the underside with a "PP" inside the triangle symbol. it's the same stuff spawnbags are made of. Ziplock and Glad both make PP containers...I use the Glad ones with blue lids.

Magash has a thread over in regular cultivation about pressure cooking in containers with a 5 in the triangle. It's been a while since I looked at it, but the point was to just cook, case, & grow in the same container.
AFOAF just picked up some 'dinner' sized ziplock containers since it's a tough season to find jars where he lives.

I just put the lid on top and after the pc is opened I close it. the blue lid ones don't deform when I use them. Use polyfill(fishtank filter fluff) instead of cotton, cotton can let contaminants in if it gets damp. The little containers make nice substitutes for petri dishes by the way.And after it's grown over you can inject thru the lid to make liquid innoculant.

> The little containers make nice substitutes for petri dishes by the way.And after it's grown over you can inject thru the lid to make liquid innoculant. Good idea. You could seal the little hole with high temperature silicone I guess ? Would that stick to the lid ?

I have used high temp silicone as inject sites on glad lids and frutopia bottles. http://members15.clubphoto.com/peter627123/2058710/guest.phtml 13 th pic down. punch or burn a hole, scuff it up and put high temp automotive blue silicone on BOTH sides of the hole.Jab as needed dab with alcohol before and after injection and once a month or so just to be safe. you could inject or draw thru the polyfill too if you like.

It seems to have been deleted. I get
"We cannot proceed. There was a problem looking up the post in our database.

When I click a link for that thread.

You can just wipe them down with 70%+ isopropyl or Lysol spray. Zero contaminants from the container so far.
If you like bulk work you can do the same to the larger 5-10gal+ containers. If you are worried about contams then just use a higher initial spawning rate.
I would not recommend UV sterilization as it makes plastics brittle after a while and you can get the same results without having to fiddle with UV.
good luck
