Moonlight and weed
    #3425989 - 11/30/04 01:50 AM (12 years, 11 days ago)

hey ive always kinda wondered this. How does the moonlight affect the groeth of pot during its budding cycle? Does this put indoor gardeners at a disadvantage or an advantage? Ive always heard that they need total darkness and well, its not totally dark outside. What color spectrum does the moonlight put out anyways? Id think a blueish or something mabye.. i dunno wht do you guys think?

Moonlight is not of sufficient intensity to interfere with cannabis light cycles. This is likely incorrect for ALL the other non-canna spp.

Correct. Moonlight cannot possibly be intense enough to affect cannabis during the flowering phase, or else no buds would ever form on outdoor plants, which is not the case. Any light of sufficient intensity introduced during the dark period will cause the plant to remain in vegetative growth. Cannabis needs 12 full hours of uninterrupted darkness for a period of about 2 weeks to initiate flowering. The horomone that causes cannabis to flower builds to a critical level in the darkness and this initiates flowering after a time. Any light destroys this horomone, not allowing it to build to the critical level where flowering occurs. Even the light from a dim flashlight will destroy the horomone and should be avoided if you are trying to flower your plants. Moonlight, however is just dim enough, even at its brightest, to not disturb the plant. Isn't nature infinitely amazing? I do believe however that some pure sativa strains will flower at certain points in their life cycle regardless of the light levels. This is because most pure sativas are adapted to more tropical regions and very long light cycles, and so must flower anyway to ensure survival of the species.

^ Said it well

As a note, afoaf grew a sativa behind a fruit tree ~20yds from a metal halide street lamp. You could come out at night and see every bud on the tree in the reflection of the street light, but it flowered up and finished in 90 days like all of its sisters deep in the woods. The potency was all there too. I'm guessing the light from the MH was equivalent to a full moon at the distance and being shielded slightly by a tree.

it's rare but possible. it's more higher-intensity light over a short interval that you gotta worry about. i've seen greenhouse plants get messed up from having car headlights sweep over them. i don't think that moonlight would be a big problem though.
