Nasty Terrible ... Worms!
    #3425890 - 11/30/04 01:27 AM (12 years, 9 days ago)

Hey, I'm rather new to this forum and community but I've managed to pick up a plethora of information over the past few weeks from the site. But one thing which I haven't seen covered is the issue of worms. I went shroom hunting a few days ago and after a day of drying my shrooms I've noticed not only a lot of little holes in the caps and stems of many of my shrooms but I've noticed a lot of worms in the shrooms I've collected. These little worms seem to just be rapidly multiplying at an almost uncontrollable rate. For every one worm that's visible outside of the shroom there's probably 50 or so embeded deep within the shroom. Now I've read on other sites that these worms are harmless if eaten but at the rate they're going there won't be anything left for me to consume. They've managed to turn healthy caps into pure mush and garbage in just a matter of hours. I really have no clue how to solve this problem or what not. But one thing I've found is that once the shroom has dried and is able to be stored in a mason jar (or air tight container) the best thing to do is to rid the jar of all the oxygen (using either the dry ice method or any other method or removing the oxygen). It just pisses me off that these little things are ruining my haul. If anyone has any other solutions to ridding shrooms of these little worms then please help! =)

Here are some pictures of the worms in one of my shrooms;

maggots.

dry them out really quick before they devour the entire shroom (and they will pretty much), OR throw them out and pick more carefully.

also isolate maggoty shrooms from the non-maggoty ones. if the stems are flemsy, they've been eaten by maggots. you don't want to contaminate non-maggoty shrooms...

That sucks! I once picked some seemingly healthy Amanita Muscaria only to find upon drying that there were some "worms",
(maybe they were maggots) in my stash. I have not yet found any psilocybes but my incident with the amanita has me
apprehensive about those little fuckers being in my find. I too am interested in any possible ways of preventing worms
from coming home from the field and whether or not they are unhealthy. Any insight, people?

after reading this thread i became paranoid of the drying ones within my dessicator...I opened it up, laid all the big mushrooms out on their caps and individually picked thru about 200 1/2" mushrooms inspecting each one. I found 10 fat white maggots with black heads squirming around in all. Most had formed these weblike sacks around themselves between the mushrooms..so i had to(didnt have to, prefered to rather) ditch bout 12 mushrooms total, not a huge loss. I'm to squimish bout these things...makes me shiver just watching them squirm =\, extra protein my ass :P maybe for the garbage can  :rolleyes: ~D

i always toss "wormified" mushies. some people say to not worry about it and that "it's an additional source of protein" but the idea if eating maggots, disgust me. yuck!

mjshroomer has a cool post on mushroom pest you may wanna check out. it doesn't cover any solutions to the problem but it is interesting.

The next fear factor eating contest....
OK.. now you have 5 minutes to eat as many of these maggot infested hallucinogenic mushrooms as you can, after which you will each sit in the lobby of the DEA with an ounce of crystal meth in your pocket for 3 hours.
GO!

Well after most of the shrooms dried I separated the ones that were completely infested from the ones that weren't infested/were minorly infested. I placed all the non-infested/minorly infested shrooms in a mason jar and filled it with CO2 (Using a CO2 Powerlet for a Pellet Pistol). After about 5 minutes the few maggots which were visible in the jar (from the minorly infested shrooms) stopped moving and just kind of stuck to the sides/bottom of the jar. I assume that they're now dead now since there's no oxygen but damn... I lost so many shrooms because of infestation. sucks =/

I think your best bet (other than checking carefully in the field) would be to dry them out FAST and dry them out COMPLETELY.

CO2 works great for removing bugs/insects/worms/maggots/etc from mushrooms. Commercial morel/chanterelle/matsutake/etc pickers use this technique.
