Could my RAM be failing???
    #3425569 - 11/30/04 12:10 AM (12 years, 8 days ago)

The past few weeks my computer has been restarting itself while doing lots of multi tasking or going back to my desktop with a game going. I just replaced my hard drive so I don't think it's that. When it restarts sometimes I can see a quick flash of what I think is a memory error blue screen. It's pissing me off and im not sure whats wrong exactly....

There is a way to disable the autoreboot on a crash, but I don't remember how offhand. Doing this could give you some valueable info. It sounds to me like it could be due to overheating, but bad ram is a possibility too. Try running memtest86. http://www.memtest86.com/

If you have a high end video card on an older power supply (common if you've been upgrading system components but not the case/ps) that might be causing these problems possibly.. if its not the ram that is.

I have an Radeon 8500 and my power supply is a 400W Antec, so thats not the problem.

My dad said he doubts it's any hardware failing that something in windows was causing it. Trying to find an XP cd right now.

I never get any errors at all.

its probablty the ram
the test you used is proably the best test out there besides a stand alone tester. if u can switch it out wiht a different stick.

by the way how much do u have and in what config?

It's a generic stick of 256 DDR. I've had my system over clocked for around 2 years and never had any problems. But when all this started happening I put my speeds back to stock. I just reintalled windows 2k last night and so far everythings worked ok.

ok I'm getting the same problems again. I was playing Diablo II and the game shut down because of some error then I got a quick flash of a blue screen and it resest....

overclocking can significantly shorten its life span. ive had pcs burn out and do what your describing even after i clocked them back to stock speeds. might be time to get a new processor.
