4 questions

I have a few question, so rather than make 4 separate posts, I will just ask them here.

First, could one refrigerate PC'ed rye jars to cool them more quickly for inoculation?

Also, regarding inoculation, Mag's tek suggest 2.5 cc from a syringe.  Would 2 cc's cause any dramatic decrease in colonization time?  Could I use even less and still colonize within 2 weeks?


The last 2 are regarding cakes.

I have some bluish-green splotches on a cake.  I believe it is probably bruising.  Is this normal, or should I be concerned of contam? 

Finally, what is a good method for rolling cakes after cold dunking?  I know its bad to touch the cake directly, so not really sure of a simple way to do it.

I know its a lot of questions guys.  Thanks in advance.  :smile:

1.) i wouldnt refrigerate, as the rapid temp change would cause the jars to crack
2.) how big are your jars? i used 1 cc per 1/2 pint and im having no real problems...i do know that by mainting the right temperature, your jars will colonize much faster
3.) sounds like contams
4.) good question, im wondering that as well :smile:

Any suggestions on how to cool the jars more quickly then? Or do I just need to let them set for 12 hours?

Any other opinions regarding the blue/green spots on the cakes? Just wanna be safe from contam.

I haven't done rye before, but i think as long as you innoc in the same places you'll be fine. Look at the contam. FAQ and if looks like that stuff then it probably is bad. Also smell it, if it smells different than mushroomy then its probably contamed. I just roll it in verm, I'm not really careful, but I don't fondle it either. You only need to let them sit for 5-6 hour if they are 1/2 pint, but in growing shrooms you need patients. You also need patients if your a doctor.

could be...go with noodle and check the faq...also, its probably the best rule of thumb to wait for the jars to cool overnight, even if they feel cool to the touch, it may still be hot enough inside to kill the spores...

Do yourself a favor and never take a Whole lungful of contamination. Some spores are lethal and others can make you sick while others will make you just want to plain out vomit but yea, it is a good way to tell if its contaminaed but i wouldnt recommend it b/c its a health hazard, but hey gl and be safe n shit
