A question for you armchair philosophers...
    #3424733 - 11/29/04 07:21 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Is it acceptable to you to do something that is against the law yet permissable or even encouraged in your (hypothetical) religion?

This question was brought up in the political forum and I was interested to see what kind of response I would get here.

I'm not religious but in my neck of the woods, only one law counts and thats the law of cause and effect.

How does one go against that law? If you figure it out, let me know.

The law has nothing to do with moral standards. There are many unjust laws. Being law does not make something moral or immoral. THe very idea of lawyers and politicians deciding what is moral is laughable.

A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

Good question

For me I follow the thoughts of God as close as I can hear.

The closer and more time I spend with him the more direction I hear.

So If I knew it was Gods direction I would do it no matter what any worldly law says

Sure it is. Why hold one set of laws above another?

They're all, equally, full of holes and hypocrisy :smirk:

Of course. That's practically the definition of civil disobedience, and it's why I use drugs even though they're illegal.

Both are tools used to control us by the illuminati.

Then who do the Illuminati answer to? Obviously if such an organiztion exists, it would have to be very structured with many 'rules'...

In my religion, Jesus said to give unto Ceaser that which belongs to Ceaser.  I think I am spelling Ceaser wrong.

So, if it is against the law, I won't do it.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Okay, I will do it, but I don't try to condone its illegality by otherwise claiming a religion that may condone it.

My illegalities:

I speed, drink while driving,  (or is that being drunk while driving???), (and please, those of you who lost a loved one due to a drunk driver, I'm really really sorry), I run red lights if they're not TOO red, I don't put my seat belt on until I'm already on the highway, ...  Can anyone else see a pattern here?

I guess I hate obeying the rules of the road.  But I don't claim to disobey them because I'm a CHristian.  Actually, I'm a bad CHristian for disobeying them.  However, I would like to admonish all of you heathens to do as I say, not as I do.

DON'T spede.
DON'T dreink and drive.
DON'T run red lites.

aS YOU were.

Jesus probably said that because he knew his responsibility.
It is more practical for people to obey the law, because in those times there would be massive bloodsheds and comflicts, and this ain't good.

i think a lot of things the religious sources (Jesus, Muhamed etc.)
said because they are good practices for preventing the civilisation
from falling down. but these things don't have anything to do with right or wrong, it was just practical at that time.

To quote 311:

"do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law
until you violate the rights of another
respect the space of your sister and your brother"

If what I am doing causes harm or infringes upon someone else's freedom, then it should not be done and therefore it should be against "the law." If it still is however, I do not see a problem with it since I believe we all must follow "God's law" above our Government's. What if the Government said to exterminate a race of people (i think we all can relate to this idea)?

But it can't really be said for a general sense since every Religion has such a difference in what "God's Law" is. But if the Religion is asking to harm another, then it's obviously not an accurate representation of what God is. Any religion that encourages you to tread on other people's freedoms, whether its stealing or killing/hurting another person, is obviously mislead.

I dunno, good question, tough answer.

Morals should be made based on what you believe, not what someone else tells you to believe. The law, religous or polititical, while neccisarily affects morals, should not be defining morals for anyone.

it always depends on the situation, but for the most part I wouldn't be one to use laws as concrete guidelines on how to live my life.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.
