how my friend gets the right moisture content in jars of rye
    #3424621 - 11/29/04 08:58 PM (12 years, 14 days ago)

For those who want the OPTIMUM moisture content of their grain or any other substrate for that matter. Never doubt your jars again.

my friend prepares his jars with 175ml of water and 240 ml of grain.
You measure the both of these with a graduated cylinder(the kind scientists use to measure liquids for newbies) covered each with foil over the lids, doesn't matter if you use a filter or not.

This made the moisture content of the grain 51%. Optimal moisture for grain is 49%-52%.

Here is how he figured out after numerous trials.

Make 10 (or as many as your pressure cooker can handle) and keep track of how much grain and how much water you added to each jar. You can write on the lids or choose a method that's easiest for you. Remember make each one slightly different for comparison.

Pressure cook them for an hour and 20 minutes and let cool. This is just for experimental purposes, so it doesn't matter if contams get in. Once the pressure cooker cools off, take the jars out of the cooker, place on a shelf and wait for those to cool(about two hours)

Now shake each jar, evenly distributing the wet and dry kernels, but remember which jar is which. Now weigh 100 grams of each jar and place them separately on a cookie sheet. Write a chart on a separate piece of paper to remind you which pile of rye came from what jar. Bake in an oven for 3 hours @ 250 degrees.

Take the sheet out of the oven carefully and reweigh all of the piles separately. Take this new weight and subtract it from the original weight and you have the percentage of water in your grain.

This has helped my friend in the past and now it takes him only 5 minutes to prepare 50 jars.

good luck

cant u just drain the grain after the PC and compare the weight? The heaviest has most water sucked in the grain?

No, because you wouldn't know the moisture percentage. Seems like a lot of people try to take shortcuts and the easy way and don't even get to see the maximum outcome of your grow. Optimum conditions, optimum yields. But hey, what do I know, I'm just a newbie to this website, lol.

I think there are people happy with the harvest they get. They dont give a f00k if it is 47 or 53% in their rye.

They are happy with enough. Which is rather unique in this overconsuming "more more" society.

And as long as the kernals havent exploded the more water in them the better, when its too much they xplode. Thats enough for me and many others.

Good luck, and have fun, with your experiments though...

Word, simmering is all you need for water content.

You bake a known weight of grain till it's dry and compare it to the pre baked weight to know it's starting water content.
Adjust as needed to get what you want.
That's the theory anyway.I just soak it overnight to wake up the bacteria and hope for the best.
If it looks too dry after I PC it I add sterile water and shake.
If it looks too wet I let it dry for a while(thru the filter patch) before I inoculate it.

Peterthinks,

Couldn't you just microwave on low for a few minutes? That ought to drive the water out.

It's what farmers do to check the water content of corn.
