Don't waste your time with coffee filters. Others warned me and I did it anyway, and I lost every jar that I have ever used them on. I think they do more to make trouble than prevent it.

My b-day is happy! Just checked my 3 half gallon rye jars that were prepared with a filter disc, then innoc'ed with honey syringes. I just gave the now molded filter a turn loose, and stuck the needle through the section of the filter which is normally sealed between the band and jar. Twist the filter back down and re-install the band. Then I just threw them into a sterilite with a submersible heater/circulatoin pump at 85 degrees f.
One was done with a seperate syringe and that is showing nothing (contams. included).
The other two were innoc'ed with 6 cc's each less than 36 hours ago. Now they look like someone shook in a handful of that pretty, white beach sand. Tiny white specks EVERYWHERE! This is the fastest, most evenly spread, myc. recovery I've ever seen. Not that I've seen much of anything, but I definately think my cash was well spent.
With God as my witness, I shall never use polyfill again...
(Sorry about the GWtW reference)

Um.... i think you'll have better success with just a plain verm layer on top. Especialy since it's your first time. Monkeys around here use polifil INSTEAD of the PF verm layer. I'm pretty sure these disks are meant to be used in the same way.

Ok I am a sales man for Health Mor products. They sell an air flitration cleaner( vaccuum) and also just an air flitration system. The facts go like this.......
Any filters that one can aquire at a retail store is undoubtedly a HEPA air fliter which filters out 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns in size.
The problem with that is the bulk of micro batieria fall in the range of 0.2 to 0.1 microns in size so if you want to avoid contams forget about this.
The filters my company uses are tested by the FDA and EPA to filter out 99.98% of particles down to 0.1 microns in size.
Therefore this idea though great can only be executed the way you intend with the firters we have and we are the only ones on the market today that carry filters that effective. Maybe I should steal a bunch of sample fiters cause they are circluar and sell them of something.

> I boil jars on high heat for 5 min and steam on med/lo for 40min
40 min is way too short.
OK for pressure cooking, but 1.5 hours is the way to go when steaming.

Hey I finally figured out what went wrong! it was the jars themselves not the filters... They weren't being sterilezed /cleaned properly. I had to use Ryche Hawks sterileization tek. Used bleach and water to clean old jars and everthing is going fine as of now. Just though i'd clear it up.
