Tip: Don't throw out those maggoty shrooms!

sometimes in the field you'll run across the some what old, but nice looking mushroom, and the stem is flimsy in one part because maggots have eaten the inside of the stem.

Between two fingers flatten all along the stem to smash the maggots, you'll feel them pop between your fingers. It's fun!

Now you saved that shroom so it can have time to dry.

my friend always saves maggot destroyed shrooms for tea.

good luck

I wish psychedelic mushrooms were legal, because I would like to indulge in this amazing fruit of the earth. Unfortunately, I can only learn about this interesting hobby, and cultivate legal mushrooms.

I found a few A. Pantherinas awhile back just by chance at a park. I didn't have any proper containers for them, so I just grabbed them and set em on my passenger seat in the car.

When I went to the car to retrieve them the next day, I found a pile of white maggots crawling around on the seat. Yuk! (or yum to the protein deprived I guess...)

All of the Panthers and Muscaria that I have found this year have been maggot infested, not just in the stem, but also throughout the cap. Alot of the other mushrooms I have picked (all non-active) have also had these little critters. I wonder if the ones in the Amanitas are happier than the ones in the others?

Food for thought.

Be Well!

tip: leave the maggot mushrooms behind. They rotted for a reason, so they could stay there w/o being picked.. Besides, by the time a mushroom gets maggots in it, it is past the prime of picking .

The issue with the maggots isn't so much the maggots themselves, although most people I know find the thought of eating them distasteful. As the maggots tunnel through the mushroom they leave feces behind. Their feces have the same sorts of bacteria as ours do, which brings up the possibility of food poisoning. Food poisoning from E. coli can be very serious and unpleasant.

If there are a small number of maggots, the probability of a bacteria concentration that will cause food poisoning is lower, but if there are a lot of them I'd definitely leave the mushroom behind.

Happy mushrooming!

If you have some grain alcohol, you could always use the nastier shrooms to make psilocybin extract.

(sorry for the unnecessary comment, but i think i speak for everyone when i say we shroompeople would be much better off without maggots [and dont start feeding me that ecosystem bullshit])

I always fond with Pan Subbs anyways, that the maggots crawl out once the mushroom starts drying. I just seperate the stem from the cap and leave it in a window to dry and the maggots eventually all crawl out and you'll have a pile of dead dried maggots next to them.

I picked a good haul today, and I was excited until I turned them upside down to look at the gills and found they were tinted grey with hundreds of maggots, all of them were covered... Should I just make tea?
