Best HD mp3 player
    #3410372 - 11/25/04 10:50 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

What, in your opinion, is the best HD mp3 player out there right now? I've been leaning towards the iPod simply because I know a few people who own them so I actually have an understanding of how to use them/how the menu's are organized and such. Today the iRiver caught my eye ...

I'm just looking to hear your opinions.

I have a Rio Karma, which has some really great features like ogg and flac support, and some very customisable playlist features (play everything from a certain decade, least/most played files, play by genre etc..). The charging station has audio-out ports and an ethernet port if you want to share your files over a network (although it's slower than the USB2 connection you also get).

It's hard to actually reccommend one though because from what I've heard the build quality is horrendous. Apparently hard-drive failures are very common and buttons are prone to falling off. My hard-drive crashed once but somehow seemed to sort itself out, which is fortunate as there's no hard-reset button on the unit (the 'solution' I've read on forums is to bang it really hard against a table!).

I've heard that some of the iRiver players are pretty good.

How much are you looking to spend?

--------------------
The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

I'm probably going to want to spend just as much as if I were going to get a 40GB ipod. I have 33.5 gigs of music I want to keep with me, And am just curious about alternatives to the ipod.

I have a rio karma also, not one problem so far. but I take very good care of things. Karma only holds 20 gigs (bout 18 actually).
If you NEED 33.5 gigs of music your choices are limited I'd say go for the iriver. The ipod is way overrated.

i have a 30gb nomad zen and i love it. I started with an oldschool 6gb nomad but i decided to upgrade when i got my new computer. When i bought it, i was tempted to get something larger, but i wasnt willing to spend ~$100 for 10gb more... 30gb is enough for my roadtrip music... i can hit play and drive from here (east coast) to cali and not listen to the same song twice... anything else i need goes on the laptop

I'd say the ipod... I just got the upgraded 20 gig, and it's pretty rockin. I like them because they're very simple, and just let you listen to the music with minimal bullshit and confusing menus. I want to see this rio karma now though...

I had an iriver. Good sound, great features but frustratingly slow to load up and navigate.

I settled on an iaudio m3 and love it. If you like to control solely by remote then the m3 is the go. Better sound then the iriver and has the same features.

If you have to have a screen on the unit then stick with the ipod or a creative zen player. They're both topline. I considered the karma but reading about all those hard drive failures scared me off. I hear it's ace when its working though. Gapless playback is its biggest advantage that no other player has. The iaudio is close to gapless but you can still tell when the tracks switch.

Just check out the reviews on cnet.com and decide for yourself.

Last I heard the Sony network walkman doesn't actually play mp3s. You have to convert everything to atrac. Great if you had an MD and had all your files as atrac, but to have to convert mp3 to atrac is really gunna kill the sound. I heard they're changing this to make it play mp3s natively but I'm not sure they've done it yet.

iPods kick ass and aren't that expensive if you don't get the newest model.

I still need to check for compatibility with linux.

This might not be a problem though, because I am looking to set up a dual boot (adding XP) so I can record music. (Haven't succesfully done that in linux)

i have an ipod..

advantages: design is great.. the way your music is organized and the interface is neat. lots of features.. does mp3, mp4.. converts mp3 AND WMV to aac

disadvantages: every player is going to have its bugs. When the ipod has something wrong with it... if you want to do something as simple as restore the OS settings or whateve.r. you have to WIPE OUT all your music.. and you never know when this is going to happen

The battery is ok.. lasts 7-8 hours without a charger. if you use anything that uses up the ipod battery (like the iTrip) it will SUCK THE LIFE OUT of your ipod. My itrip woulfd reduce the ipod life to 3-4 hours which wasn't bad.. but as timje went back this went down and down and down...... to the point now where if it isn't charged 100% (which takes forever to get those last few % in) then it will last only 10 minutes and then die.

If you have a car stereo with a tape adapter or a line in, you should be good to go.

Also.. you're not as free to mess around with the file structure of the ipod. You can't just stick a song on your ipod on your playlist and then delete it off of your computer... because the ipod has 214309823402 folders that keep track of your music and you have no idea where iTunes will drop it (yes you HAVE to use itunes to set up music on this thing.. you can't just drag drop and play)... which sucks... but itunes is pretty cool... there's a lotta neat tricks to it

trust me the karma is the best choice. it has way more supported codecs and supports open source codecs so you dont have to worry about mpeg group sueing you over codecs, plus they make a java client for it that works on linux, also it has a built in web server, so you can hook it to your router and access it from any of your PCs
