Fuck Casings!
    #3422050 - 11/29/04 01:52 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

I just lost 3 good cakes trying to make a casing!  I had 3 colonized jars I let colonize even over time to get nice and colonized.  I dunked the cakes overnight, and broke them up in a zip lock bag just to make sure I didn't get any contams in from my hand.  I made sure I used a sterile container, filled the bottom of it with a layer of verm, and then poured the broken up cakes in and covered with verm.  I misted the top layer, covered with foil with holes poked in and let it colonize for a few days, and then birthed in my fruiting chamber with the rest of my cakes.  Well, I let it go for a week, and nothing is poking out.  I try and brush some of the top layer of verm off thinking that I may have have made it to deep.  I keep brushing expecting to find a layer of white underneath, but keep brushing and tapping the extra verm into the garbage.  The next thing I know I keep tapping and almost the entire casing falls into the garbage can!!! It seems that none of the mycelium ever recovered after breaking it up, just some loosely joined gray chunks, but no bright white spots to be found at all, and a smell like new shoe rubber coming from the casing!  This isn't the only time I've had problems.  I tried casing a jar of birdseed before, and was probably my most succesful because it actually recovered after breaking up, but eventually grew mold from the bottom of the container it was in.  I also tried using a verm coir mix one time with a pf jar, but the entire casing layer got green very quickly.

This last experiment was a real dissapointment because I lost three perfectly good cakes that could have been fruited PF style with no problems.  It always seems that when I break up the myc, it never recovers or gets contams introduced.  Therefore, I say fuck casings, I haven't had any luck with them, just cakes thus far.

I respect your stand point. Im a good fan of "go with what works" because you are always garuanteed. The excitement about expirimentation is that of not knowing. Rather than irrationally voice your opinion, conduct an experiment and proove your theory.

Try breaking appart your cakes and lay them in a casing contain, just dont case it. See if you can fruit that, see if they will recover from the breakup without having a casing layer to blame. I feel your anger, the emotion is a very productive one. Put it to good use, test your theory.

biglo, I would recommend a book for you called "The Mushroom Cultivator" by Paul Stammets. Trust me. Buy that book and ALL your questions will be answered. costs about 35 dollars i think, but WELL worth it.

Sorry, this was more a venting post, I have tried experimenting with casings before, but this fourth attempt was a real heartbreaker.  I figured I knew my cakes well and have finally got that part down pat over time, and I figured I had a good idea about keeping things sterile and followed the teks in the FAQ's for casings, but it seems I keep getting nothing but dissapointment.  I even used verm because it seems to give me less problems with contams instead of making a true casing layer mix.  I'm just looking for some constructive criticism.

PS - I actually let the casing be covered for about 3 days before birthing, the week after I'm referring to is after that point, may have even been a couple days more.  The thing was smelling like pungent rubber, which made me know that the entire thing had gotten contamed at some point, and the lack of myc recovery pretty much confirmed it after I examined it and it fell apart :frown:

Read http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/26004

1.) then make a "TiT" Incubator. ~85F (24 dollars, wal-mart)
2.)buy a bag of "Jiffy Mix" at a gardening store, wal-mart, fred meyer. (3 dollars)
3.) apply adequate casing layer
4.) place saran wrap over the casing, incubate
5.) birth when mycelium breaks through casing layer evenly

Please, I am able to get colonized jars of birdseed and other substrates down pat. I only need advice for improving my casing methods, or any tips for changing what I've done.

how exactly did you make the casing? how deep was the initial layer, cake layer, and casing layer?

what were the size of substrate chunks used? Was there large gaps between them?

Ok, I put a thin layer of verm on the bottom of the casing layer and lightly sprayed the top of that, it was maybe a 1/3 inch deep, I then broke up the cakes in a freezer bag, the size of the pieces varied from very fine to about 1/2 inch chunks on average, although I left a few longer chunks in as well. The casing layer was about 2 1/2 inches thick and covered with about 1/2 inch of moist verm. I covered the entire thing with foil and poked some holes in and left it alone for about three days, then I threw it into my terrarium.

1/2 is a big casing layer maybe thats why it took so long to colonize. try 1/4 next time. also make sure your chunks of cake give an even layer at the top, so your casing layer is even. all the rest sounds good though.

Read above please - Yes, I agree in retrospect that the casing layer may have been a bit too thick, however, the thing never even colonized, it just contamed.

I had great success on my first try..

However, even if I would've failed, I wouldn't have given up. It is a superior method.. Why not master it?

Make sure the water you are using to spray the layers is sterile. I would recommend a 1:10 or so mixture of H2O2 and distilled water. OTher then that it seems like you just need to keep trying.

i dont even do cakes anymore, its way more inconvenient when it comes to casing for me working with cakes(id imagine anyways, i never actually cased cakes). with grains you can just shake them fairly hard and its all broke up inside the sterile jar, then you poor out and case or mix with poo, whatever you do....and its quick.(i know u know, but doesnt hearing how easy it is turn you away from cakes?)

and more potent fruits at that. and 4 times the amount of spawn(quarts) colonizes faster than a half pint PF cake colonizes(for me anyway). but then i only ever tried cakes once and never went back after my friends werent satisfied with potency. :smirk:

my only tried and true method of 100 yes 100% success.....is..

pray for a successful grow with absolutely no contams of anykind

i clearly hear in my head "anytime."  god loves us. he aint against shrooms, but all for them   give it a try...and have faith. dont doubt.
