Smell but no visual contam?

Ok.. this sucks.. its been several weeks.. 1 jar out of 12 started to pin (yay!) so hes in the terrarium.. hopefully someone fun will grow in the next few days... as for the rest of my jars.. a couple were lost to some ugly molds.. and i have about 6 left but they look good.. very white mycelium.. yet i opened the lids to take a little sniff and they kinda smell funky.. like fruitish smell i guess.. is this contamination? and whats why they havent pinned yet like the 1 did? sucks cause they all kinda smell the same.. broke one cake up and it stunk up my house... what would cause this.. the cake did feel quite dry.. is this smell from drying out?

If its a clean, earthy, mushroomy smell, then you are probably ok. If its a nasty rotten apple, burnt bacon, etc. smell then my friend would junk the cake.

Sometimes when doing a large rubbermaid or d.b. type box My friend gets the odor of CO2 which is a biproduct of the myceliums growth...this is just fanned away........it may not be what you are running into with cakes though....good luck.

Sourish smell could mean bacteria, which sometimes is not visable...
