Filter questions...
    #3420693 - 11/28/04 08:04 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

I took the lids off my quart canning jars and replaced them with tyvek and screwed the collar back onto the top. I noticed in a few of my jars (haven't checked them in 3 or 4 days) the popcorn was starting to dry out. I think I left too much area exposed for water to escape through the tyvek. Will they completely dry out or what? Should I have done anything different to prevent water loss but still allow for air exchange? Anything I can do now?

Based upon information I just got on my thread, the tyvek is microporous and should allow air exchange, while still keeping the water inside and any contams out.

Were you certain your lid was sealed tight?

I am not certain then, my understanding was the tyvek keeps moisture inside the jar.

I am curious about this now as well, hope you get an answer.

Well some have told me that tyvek is waterproof, but not able to block water vapor. Idk.

Well i'm not sure about the cause but I might have a soultion to help for now. Fill a syringe with (44ml i think) of sterilyzed water and inject it into the jar to help get some water back into the jars. I don't remeber the exact amout for pints but i think it is 45 mls. Don't flood your jars, but a little bit of water would help them. Gl

Moisture will escape along with the air exchange. The amount you lose will be proportional to the surface area of tyvek that is exposed to air. I usually cover my tyvek with strips of tape, leaving only a portion of the tyvek surface exposed to air. Alternatley, you could put tyvek over the mouth of the jar, and then apply a lid that has holes in it, followed by the band, as long as the holes in the lid are smooth and don't puncture the tyvek.

The same thing happened to me with popcorn and tyvek. My jars started to grow a little, but then they began to seem VERY dry. So, I decided to inject a little more spore water into them. Now there seems to be no growth at all. There is a little bit of nasty looking slimy water in them now, as well as a not so great smell coming from them.

I don't know if they lost moisture during the PC through the tyvek, or if the water content wasn't right before sterilizing, but my jars are dead now. Next time, I'm gonna try a different grain.

You guys have me concerned that the holes in my rye jars are too large now.

Guess I will be taping the holes up some, heh

Guys listen up. the jars are drying up because you do not have anything covering up the tyvek lids. my brother had the same problem. Solution: pressure cook with aluminum foil. after injection, dispose of old foil and put on new foil. this will keep the moisture in. to give the jars air exchange take off foil and shake. it's as simple as that. OR use the metal lids with a 1" hole in the top with the tyvek filter inbetween the lid & rim. peace. hit me up with some stars boyz!

Well if you're using canning jars:
Poke about 5 1/8" holes in the disc.
Put in your substrate.
Put on tyvek filter.
Put on disc.
Screw on lid.
Put on foil.
PC.
Grow mushrooms.
Eat mushrooms.

Mine were taped and foiled, and I still had problems with moisture seepage. Also, the jars had a vaccuum built up in them after the PC.
