Greetings All,
 
    Well i've been doing brf cakes for awhile and now i've moved on to WBS b/c i now own a 22qt. Pressure cooker(thankx Grandma Ur the Best! haha) and i've read a tek but it doesn't match up with others. I know the whole prefence deal with people so I was going to question this tek and wonder what you thought. :cool:

Well it says that some wbs has bird-kode(kote?) and it says that you don't have to rinse off but you should(I'll be rinsing them Def.) Now the tek doesn't eleborate on some things that I have seen in these threads before. For instance, it doesn't say anything about soaking, I've heard that you should soak to get out the "floaters", I forget why they don't need to be in there, but I've been told that they need to go. Also it says Nothing about (blank), damnit i forget the word, i think it's simmer? I've also read that you should simmer them for 15-30 mintues but I think that's popcorn.So my questions are,

Do i need to soak and if so, how long?
To simmer or not?

And anything else i'm forgetting that you think's important just fill it in. Well thanks for your help and if you have any other teks/links then that would be Greatly appreciated.I Read People, lol.

man i don't know what wbs tek you have read, everyone i have seen says to saok for 12 to 24 hours then some say simmer some don't,seen a post recently, that they had probs with simmering the wbs compared to not simmering. well i have mine soaking now i removed all the floaties it really takes a little bit out so you can kinda fill up your jars all the way to the brim cause your going to remove a bit.

Well I've heard simmering to long is bad and I'm not sure about simmering yet, but I'm going to got rinse them and fill em up and I've read for pint jars that you should only fill them with 2/3's of a cup so that you have room to shake them.Well not 2/3rds but enough rooms for them to be able to be tossed around for when you shake them. Thankx man and Gl, Anyone helps got any pointers or anything? Thanx!

^^ Read that, follow it exactly for your first time.

As a general rule, I try to rinse my grain before soaking, after soaking and after simmering as much as possible. I only fill my quarts 1/2 full with grain, easier for me to shake.

Yep, you're forgettin a bunch of stuff ;]

You need to remove the floaters because they are empty/undeveloped seeds and are of no use to you. What you should do is soak in your PC, stir it around so all the floaters come to the top, then scoop them out with a cup or bowl.

I only soak for 2 hours. After soaking, I rinse the grain well before I simmer for 30 minutes. Rye is simmered less than popcorn and WBS. Simmering allows the grain to completely and maximally hydrate itself. You should expect to around somewhere around 30 minutes, but you should stop once the grains start busting open. This means the grains are full, and you don't want busted grains cause they lead to clumps.

After you simmer, rinse VERY well, wbs ESPECIALLY, I've used 4 different grains, and WBS is by far the dirtiest. You want to rinse very well because if you don't the grains will develop a gel like substance on them. This will caese grains to clump together, reducing shakeability, as well as collecting a pool of ooze at the bottom of your jar, and hinder colonization.

I've had the most luck with rye, while popcorn is the cleanest, it seems my spores germinate slower on popcorn. But once I get a liquid culture going, and some G2G, popcorn should be the best by far.

red, don't fill your jars to the brim, cause then you can't shake them. Leave about 2" from the top of the jar.

Definately simmer. I simmer until I see a couple grains in every scoop exploded.

I've heard of macroni and it went Fast. I read about it in the Advanced forum, intersing stuff, if you kno what you're doing, they won't goo and they colonize fast, (8 days or less i believe and yield well ive heard), thankx a bunch and gl.

I'm going to skip the soaking process my next time around, simmering is all you need, but you do NEED it.

i didn't think soaking 12 to 24 was critical not to say it isn't im going to take a chance.im only doing 8oz jars to start just to spawn to poo,i picked some up today shit is so broke down it looks like to soil,nice cow shit ..we had a snow last wed so its nice and clean smelling. but anyhow my half pints are spawing and my pints are going to be cased.i don't have lids for my pint jars so im using tvek with some shit called press seal. its like cling wrap except way better.it held up to boiling temps just fine. so my press eal will act like a jar lid

yeah that fucking wbs is dirty....like real dirty wow i must have rinsed it with a sprayer 3 dif times.i used and old window screen for my strainer. worked great. kernels looked nice.i noticed the seeds sucking up the water as i simmered for the 30 minutes. oust the air around the seeds as they drain.washed my jars clean put them into the pc with lid to keep out unwanted germs.

should i inject cambodia or amazons..no real anwser to it i know. tyring to sum up anything i left out. draining for 30 minutes plus. only concern is my new pc it's a 6.3 qaurt..doesn't give the ..psi..
should i be safe and cook for 1 1/2 hour? consider it is maybe a 10 psi.buts its a real nice cooker..nothing cheap..18/10 steel..doesn't undertsand the /10 part.

anyhow im off to do some work post back later..

Soaking serves one purpose and one purpose only-To let the endospores germinate,which in turn, makes them easier to kill when PC'ing. Yes, some endospores can/will survive the high temps of a pc.So, soaking just increases your odds of having no contams.

Hey doc I have a question.

Bit off topic but the question was lurking and triggered by your tek where there is a pic with someone inoculating a wbs jar.

Q: At which angle do you hold the syringe in the wbs jar? Just straight down vertical?

Also with the jars not completely filled at all, for shaking, the needle only penetrates the grain/wbs for 1/4 inch or so.

The needle does not have to penetrate the grain at all-just poke and squirt, then shake the hell out of it.

This is not the PF style of innoculating to where you have to insert the needle into the substrate past the dry verm layer to avoid contams.With grains all you do is "Poke & Hope",lol.Meaning that you just insert the needle into the jar and squirt out about 1-2cc of solution and hope like hell you were sterile up to that point,lol.Cause if you were,you will have a colonised jar in approximately 8-14 days.

well good idea..sprayed oust all over my work area kept my seeds covered. then i lysol my hands.did up 3 pint jars to half pints. im going for bulk with those half pints..i did my seeds last night soaked them for 1 or 2 hours. can't recal, but i let them sit in the jars after soaking from last night. so they are still wet and technicaly still kinda being soaked in water for them to bring out the bad guys? well either way no turning back.
