How to prevent wet-spot?
    #3419456 - 11/28/04 04:09 PM (12 years, 11 days ago)

The kitten is having some issues with wet-spot in her grain jars. Is it just a matter of lowering moisture content? (she soaked for 20 hours, loaded jars, then PC'd.)

I had one in my bag. I think it was from just condensation running down the sides of the bag and settling.

Probably... I never had luck with soaking

Try this:

Simmer for 1.5 hrs. or till grain starts to split.
Rinse and Drain for 30 min to an hour. (I prefer a 1 min spin in the Washing Machine)
Then load your jars for the PC.

What about possible endospores?

The simmer will open and hydrate the grain, and an hour in the PC with take care of the endospores.

I just fucked up 12 jars from too much water.

What is an easy way to dry out grain after simmering? I let it sit for like half an hour in a strainer, that did not help, still too much water.

I'm thinking about just using a regular towel.

as Derx said, I add a little bit of gypsum, its the stuff that drywall is made
from, the recipie I use is for each pound of grain add 1/8 teaspoon of gypsum,
you can usualy pick it up at home depot in small strips for free, they use them
for stacking the sheetrock on, you can also pick up broken pieces there as well,
they toss it out and will generaly give it away, if you have a place to store it
you can pay about $6 for a pair of 4'X 8' sheets... that will last you a lifetime

to use it, just break off a little and grind it or crush it until it becomes
a powder, I try for a fine powder but the coarseness of sand works. I always
add a bit during my simmering/soaking and then add more when I load my jars
with grain. and give it a good shake before I PC them. You can find more info
in The Mushroom Cultivator by Paul Stammets if you happen to have a copy.

when I drain whole grains, I dump it into a colander or a screen and shake it,
a few minutes of bouncing gets thje bulk of it out and then 45 minutes to an hour
of sitting takes care of the rest of the excess, a couple more shakes for good
measure and load them up...

you can use a towel to dry it with no ill effects as long as the grains arent
too soft from simmering if you used that method.

Dump 2 cups of grain in a jelly bag, used for making jelly and available anywhere they sell canning supplies. Tie them off with an elastic band, and simmer.
You can leave these sit and drain up to an hour before filling your jars. I prefer a minute in the Washing machine on spin. It works excellent.
Four jelly bags of grain (rye) like this fills 12 pint jars.

I do that with the window screen... do it for 5 minutes with each arm, every day
and you'll be ready for the javelin throw in just a few months.
