Help! My PC didnt pass the PC test!
    #3419346 - 11/28/04 03:24 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

this indicates pressure

tried to splatch some water on the lid to see if it would instantly boil. which it didnt! :-(

the pc.

http://www.sitramcookware.com/prima.htm

Im have set it to position 2 which should be 248 degrees F at 100kPa which should be 15psi. Right?

The safety valve is releasing excess pressure now as we speak.
Still it wont pass the test. Maybe this PC is made of a different metal that wont get to the outside?

Never heard of that 'test', either way I don't think it can be very reliable. Why you bought a PC without a pressure gauge I do not know either.

Well. Bought it some time ago, and this was the only one I could find back then here in my country.

The test I was talkin about

I use the PC test all the time
I splash water on mine and it boils away very quickly, but then again mine is older and gets very hot on the outside. I could definitely imagine that a new age PC may be engineered to keep a little bit cooler on the outside.
My advice would be to PC for 90 minutes. I'm sure that your PC goes to at least 10-12 psi on its high setting, in which case 90 should be good enough to sterilize your grains.

That test is very reliable..it wont boil away immediatly at 14 PSI the same as 15 PSI..

that test is hardly a test, and has no scientific baking. If your pc says it goes to 15 PSI, i'd trust it. Unless you wanna tap it and put a guage in, but i wouldn't do that unless i was expirenced with metal working. You also must remember the elevation effects what PSI it requires to reach certain temps.

this may be your issue
Quote:

3 layer sandwich heat diffusing bottom:
stainless steel/aluminum/stainless steel

it's designed to keep the outside cooler than a PC made with a single type of
metal and also reduce the corrosion problems that some aluminium PCs have,
in the case of your PC I recomend making a small batch of 3-4 jars, sterilize
them on the PC and after it cools, remove them, set 2 of the jars asside and
inoculate the other 2 jars, in a week you should notice growth in the 2 jars
that you inoculated and there should be no growth in the other 2 jars.

The speed at which water boils at 250 degrees vs a lower temperature is scientific and the difference between 14 and 15 PSI is noticeable. There is a video actually that shows it in the FAQs which is the best way to tell if you have no guage..I've used it before to find out that bags were blocking the vent..it read at only 8-9 PSI but bubbled away quick enough for it to be 16-18.

Wow I cant imagine doing quart jars in a PC anywhere near that small.

Yea, I think there are basically 2 options for a PC:

Cheap way: used one off ebay. (I got a 16 QT for $20 plus shipping)
Expensive way: www.pressurecooker-outlet.com

I've shopped around a lot, and that's the way to go. I haven't seen anything above 7 QT liquid capacity in any retail stores around here.

this one I assume?
http://www.fungifun.org/pcooker/

if his PC is a clad design designed to dissipate heat on the exterior the test
will not work, it will eveaporate but the outside of the pressure cooker is
designed for safety, to remain cooler on the exterior walls and the top.

the procedure I mentioned will allow him to test whether or not his PC will
effectively sterilize his substrate, this will eliminate the need to purchase a
new PC or revert back to steaming PF cakes. in the test, if they all show some
growth in the first week, it can be assumed that the PC is defective and a
replacement is needed.

well got me a pc for my birthday..yay free..well its a 6.3 qaurt cooker.its decent 18/10 stainless steel. well are all standard pressure cookers set at 10 psi caus eon some of them i have notice you can change the psi setting.this one doesn't have it.i checked the manual no info on psi.i assume 10 psi cause most that i have seen under 8 don't offer a diff setting..so im happy with my pc its a nice one made by crofton..

New age= more than likely doesn't get hot very qucikly on the outside
Older Models=.....think about it
And it's an ok test but it doesn'y apply to all, Gl and you could try to cook something in it like meat and cook for as long as it says and see if the meat cooked all the way through, that'd tell you whether or not it's as hot as it should be. Gl and be safe, they fuckers are Dangerous if you don't know what you're doing or if they're not reliable/old. later
