i vote 6 because i believe that north and south america are really the same continent - and it is only historical/social prejudice that has caused them to be labeled as seperate continents.

I vote 5, because I had the benefit of a classical education.
I think of it as; Africa, America, Oceania, Europe, Asia.
Only problem is the classical model doesn't include antartica, but no-one lives there anyways

something to do with tetonic (sp?) plates, i believe. i might be horribly wrong here (and if i am, somebody please point it out - i'd like to know as well) - but i believe that there are different continental plates for most of europe and parts of central asia, and the rest of asia. it's this distinction that seperates the two into different continents... i think. let me go to google and verify this - i'll be back

If you want to base continents on tectonic plates, India should be a whole new continent on it's own. It broke off of Africa and crashed into Asia, thats what created the Himilayas.

haha i was a little nervous, because i thought i was mixing up number of oceans and continents...there are 7 oceans right??? indian, atlantic, pacific, arctic..maybe im missing some??

India is connected to the Australian plate. There are more than seven plates though - for example, the middle east is on a plate of its own.

Well, in school they teach you 7, but I think Europe and Asia should be classified as one continent. And maybe just call N. and S. America one continent.

Krishna you make a very good point. It's fooked up that I automatically picked 7 straight away without thinking about it, for myself, another example of we just accept things we're told and it says a lot about how brainwashing educational institutions really are.

i didnt know whether to say 5 or 6 cause school taught me six but i feel that its actually 5 because asia and europe are one continent in my eyes so i voted 5.
EDIT: shit.... i forgot all about antarctica damn continent covered in ice....

Seriously, though, I'd say 8. India should count as its own continent, since it has its own tectonic plate.

I go by 7, because that's what I was taught, and I don't know enough about the tectonic plates and other factors that would make it anything other than 7.
Though Europe doesn't really seem to be a separate continent from Asia in my opinion. At least you can see the point where North America and South America separate, and by the Panama Canal you could even say they're not connected. But Europe and Asia really seems arbitrary.
