Rubbermaid as a large Casing

Hello,
Imagine I have plenty of colonised substrate and a rubbermaid.
Can I just put a vermlayer in the bottom, thereover some (say 4) inches of colonised substrate, on top of that 3/4 inch of verm/coir.
Drill holes for airpump just like PMP for fresh air.
Lid on, mist by hand and grow shrooms. So without perlite or geolite.
Would this giant casing work?
PS: While typing this I got called afk, then tried to hit 2 holes in my Rubbermaid for airtubes guess what????? PMP has died before it was alive! So people use a drill... WHich I dont have.:( Will heat up a screwdriver next time.

Yes, it would work. but...
You should try to consider those 24 jars of grain as spawn (Portobello I assume) and consider using it to spawn straw or a straw/dung mixture. Two quarts of spawn grain will make a LOT of straw substrate.

This is my friend's uncle's plan. After reading tbe "bulk neglect tek" it seemed evident that straw/dung mixtures hold a lot of moisture and keep their environment moist as well. Obviously we don't want just the substrate humidifying the air, but that combined with fanning and misting should (I think) keep it at a very comfortable humidity inside the fruiting chamber without requiring him to use an excess method.
P.S. He is using two plastic "dishwashing tubs" inside a larger (65'ish gal?) sterilite container.

Hey Shadowstar, thanks.
But is that a good idea for a noob like me to start with dung and straw? I dont think my gf is amuzed when she finds cowshit in our oven...
BUT it is a good idea also cause if I want 4 inches of colonized grain in there ill need 30-35 liters/quarts of colonised rye.
Which my current incubator cant handle at all. Even though an upgrade would only cost me another large rubbermaid for 13?.
Which dung/strawtek would you advice for a beginner?

Hey man, for what it's worth, this is my friend's uncle's first grow and he is going all the way with it. He read about this stuff for 5 months straight while living somewhere he couldn't grow, and feels confident enough to skip the pf tek. Beyond there, it's grain either way (bulk or grain) so he had to learn that anyway... and he figures why not take it all the way and go for the ultimate substrate too.

If you have that much spawn ready... yes it's worth a try. You can store the rest in a cool place if you have problems and try again. You can always just use straw, pasturized in a pot on top of the stove. Should lessen the GF reaction as well.
As far as teks to follow...
Roadkills Poo Tek
Absolutely the best!

Yes true, but im kinda overloaded with info. I cannot make it a full time occupation, have a family and other work.
I just want to have some cake xperience just cause its so classic. But ok there is corn rye and cake in my incubator now.
Am reading up on agar @ petri dishes, and cloning, made 2 karo jars. Must buy stuff for making syringes and sporeprints. If I have that I can experiment more.
The only thing which scares me in the straw/dung teks is the pasteurizing. I have an oven in me kitchen, will use it when i am ready for the straw.
Before I "go straw" wanna experiment with some "normal" casings and a few cakies.
I am glad that I have an answer about the rubbermaid as a casing question. It seems that using straw is the best option for that indeed.
This hobby is so interesting.......

No i dont have that much spawn at all, I have 4 quarts of rye, a pint of popcorn, 2 100ML karo jars and a few cakes in there.
I read that tek, we dont have such a large pot to pasteurize in but will try to find one when the time has come. But no straw in this tek, is that correct?
When those roadkill poo casings are ready to fruit can I crumble them and make one big substrate layer in that rubbermaid?
Id rather skip the incubator part cause mine is to small.
In some straw teks I read they mix straw/dung and spawn, just put that in the supercasing, cover with dark plastic with holes in it. When colonisation is ready, take plastic away so its in the light and fruiting is what they do.

Just follow Roadkills tek, except use just straw, and fill your rubbermaid (instead of the smaller casings) with the pasturized straw and add 2 of those rye quarts as spawn.
You still Have to incubate your substrate. A small closet or cupboard and a small heater works great.

Hey thats creative idea, replace horse poo and use straw instead? I dont have a cupboard where my rubbermaid fits in, I could buy another rubbermaid and make a TIT out of it. When colonisation is ready I just turn the heat of, add light and fruit it. Makes sense? PS: can i also use colonised karo water to spawn the straw with?

Said the devil... :P Looking on e-bay for a 30 quart/liter pan. Cant find it Is there a possibility that I use a 10 liter pan and pasteurize the straw in 3 batches? EDIT: Hmz and how tight should i pack the straw, if i buy 30 packed liters, when wet and taken loose it will be like 60 liters.. Know what I mean?

Too damn technical for me... A half full pillow case will give you lots for your lrg rubbermaid. A bale should last you months.
Keep it simple

I'm not sure if this holds true if you are using only straw, but with poo/straw you don't have to incubate. It keeps its temp pretty high on it's own.

Nope... still have to incubate till fully colonized. Then a 10 degree drop in temp, light and air exchange will initiate pinning.

This is exactly what I am working on right now.
I have about 80 lbs of composted cow manure. I am mixing up a 33% verm 66% CCM bulk substrate. I've got 24 QT of rye and popcorn about to finish up in my TiT. Then I've got 2 x 30 gal fruiting tubs. I've got 1 cool mist and 1 ultra sonic running both tubs. I'm going to spawn my grain to 5" of bulk straight in the bottom of the tubs.

Certainly... but I would add extra straw to it. Like 50/50 by wieght, or whatecer you feel is right.
Play with it
