Hoodia Pictorial
    #3418805 - 11/28/04 10:05 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Here's a few images from my growing Hoodia collection, if you have any species outside of the four mentioned here PM me for a possible trade.

7/8 week old seedlings of H. gordonii

--------------------------------------------------

2 year old H. Juttae

--------------------------------------------------

2 year old H. macrantha

--------------------------------------------------

2 year old H. ruchii

--------------------------------------------------

There's not much difference between them, although the flowers are supposed to be different. They are all growing in the same conditions - so note how the colours on the the tips of the spines differ. Also, the H. ruchii is significantly  'chunkier' than the others.  Stay tuned, I intend doing a bio-assay soon!

I just love the 'top-down' view of the H. macrantha.

~Jack

Nice collection. I don't believe the top photos are of 1 month old hoodias. I'd say a good bit older than that.

I went back and checked, you're right they more like 7/8 weeks. I received the seeds on Oct 5th, and as far as I can remember they were sown immediately. They germinate really quickly within a week all 12 seeds had germinated.

I'll edit accordingly.

Those are realy nice! They grow real fast also dont they? Jutae has some realy splended colors and so does the macrantha. DO they both contain the same properties as Gordonii?

I don't mean to be quarrelsome but no way those are 8 weeks old either. I'd say 4 months at least. I grow hoodia myself.

LOL, they are definetly not even 8 weeks yet. They live under a 400W MH btw

If the temps are right, Hoodia will drink all the water you throw at it.  :sun:

Here's part of the order they were part of: International order placed on the 18th September - by time the order was processed + International shipping meant they weren't sown until October.

Yes, apparently all of the Hoodia genus do contain the appetite supressant p57, although I don't know why the pharmaceuticals companies singled out gordonii (perhaps it was the most abundant)

Slllloooooowwwwwllllllyyyyyyyy

Germination's not that great probably about 30-40% although experts say seeds can take years to germinate - I'm not the patient type however.

Seems germination isn't the only thing about those particular cacti that's slow. They seem to be slothy on the whole. I'm curious as to whether or not they'd take well to grafting.

How do you aclimate the seedlings to a 400 watter?

Give hoodia too much light and they burn. They do not like a lot of water either. There is no magic way to speed up the process.

When a website gets hoodia gordonii back in stock, I'm going to pick one or two up.  There 40 bucks a piece though, so probably only one - and they have been out of stock for a while now so it probably will be for next year.

Next year...I'll have pictures of my entire garden up for the shroomery to see

With ease, standard seedling conditions until the 12 of them became crowded in their 3inch pot. Remember, Hoodia grow in some of the most inhospitable places on Earth - In the middle of the desert with total exposure to the sun, and with low humidity - just like my growroom.

I started some Hoodia G. this spring and they grew pretty fast. Most of them are 3" tall at the present. Considering how much the plant costs, seeds are the way to go.

The funny thing about the seeds I used was the germination period. Most sprouted in about 2-3 days after planting them.
