Finding Straw

So where do you get straw?
I've read that you can buy it at stores like Michaels that sell craft stuff. I don't like forking over cash dollars, specially for stuff like straw.
I have also read people getting straw from farmers. I suppose I could put on my ninja suit and infiltrate a farm in the darkness of a new moon, but I'd rather just walk up to his door and ask for some. If you have gotten straw this way, what did you say you would be using it for?
I don't think I want to grow my own straw either.

many people use straw for bedding for animals such as dogs and cats. I'm positive he wont be like "WHAaaatt... are you trying to grow some of them damn shrooms with my straw??" Many farmers around here have it out to the road for like $2 a bale.

Farmers selling it on the road most likely have hay which is not the right thing to use.

coming from an area of farms, yes its true many farmers will have a lot more hay rather than straw, but many farmers also do sell straw. Do you live near a franks nursery? They're shutting the doors this week, they have bales of straw.. $8 but 70% off.

I usually buy my straw at a farm & feed store, but over Halloweeen my local supermarket had a display at the front of the store featuring bales of straw and pumpkins. Each time I went shopping I would make sure that I had an empty grocery bag upon leaving the store, and I would stop at the pumpkin display and scoop up loose straw from the ground and stuff it into the grocery bag. The store employees gave me some curious looks but no one said anything. I now have enough straw stashed in my kitchen to last me a month or more, and I do not even have to cut it up, because it is all small pieces that fell from the bales.

You can also check craft stores like Micheals or near in the craft, fabric section of Wally world, sometimes they carry it to. Straw is golden in color, hay is more of a green color.

Your farm idea was pretty close.
Take a drive in the country till you see horses. Stop and ask if you can buy a bale of straw from them, and if you can get some horse shit from them. Chances are, the straw might cost you a couple bucks, but they will probably give you all the shit you can carry
Enjoy

What is better horse- or cowshit? And also they sell dried cowshit in gardencenters, is that good stuff?
Straw is sold in every petshop here. And if a farmer asking hey what do you need it for, plenty of stories about your rabbits, ur chicken house, or to mix it with dung to fertilize your garden...

My personal preference is fresh Horse... or Elephant . Better texture, easier to work with and less smell.

If you're after a small bale of straw, you can say you need it for an archery target. If you need a bag of straw, say you need it for decoration,animal,bedding,scarecrow,etc.. You really think they're going to ask? Whenever I'm asked something I don't want to reveal..I just say, I dunno, my wife wants it for something.
