Debating
    #3418366 - 11/28/04 02:12 AM (19 years, 3 months ago)

I find my not so great vocabulary really holds me back in arguements or debates,  Its like the ideas are there in my head, I just find myself unable  to express them in words.

Very frustrating  espescially on a forum hehe

Host: I've heard whispers about the financial support your government receives from the drug industry.
Peruvian: Well, the irony of this, of course, is that this money, which is in the billions, is coming from your country. You see, you are the major purchaser of our national product, which is of course cocaine.
Host: On one hand, you're saying the United States government is spending millions of dollars to eliminate the flow of drugs onto our streets. At the same time, we are doing business with the very same goverment that is flooding our streets with cocaine.
Peruvian: Mmm-hmm, si, si. Let me show you a few other characters that are involved in this tragic comedy.

translating thoughts into words
can be a completely complicated process.

Reading is key my friend. Keep those eyes open and soon, in this case, the fingers will follow. I get frustrated so often when I know that I could use one word instead of seven. When you see new words, look em up, write em down, keep your favorites somewhere. Lots of people think this is pretencious bullshit, but screw them, for lack of better words

I think listening is also key.
Listen and pay attention to well spoken, intelligent people, it's interesting and you will find yourself restructuring your speech patterns

Had a friend in high school who was always using long words that were irrelevant to the situation, was kinda funny

Good point Funky. Ive found that Im so much better at communicating through written form than spoken. Im no neanderthal, but I get excited easily and begin speaking before I know exactly what it is I mean to say. Im trying to work on taking longer pauses between sentences to formulate my thoughts a little better. Of course not to the point of Grandpas story telling speed hehe.

You don't have to be an english major or use big words to debate.  You just have to have a stand point and be able to use facts or well diversed theories to get your point across.  Heaven knows i'm no english major, but i love a good debate/arguement.

yeah that shits funny, especially when you call people out on it. I sometimes do it by mistake, but I dont mind being corrected. Ego-shmego I say. Roll with the punches and do what ya gotta do.

passion also plays a vital part in debate. you can't argue something you don't truly believe in. Even if your not interested in the topic at hand, it still makes it hard to debate it.

I think any level headed scholar would agree with me on that. It's the right-wing conservatives that don't feel me.

I agree with you too, but the reference was to the Greek Sophists, they were a bunch of men you were well versed in rhetoric. They often won debates with little knowledge of the subject of debate. They were only clever word smiths, but never the less they debated remarkably, passionate or not.

yea, i'm familiar with Sophists. 5th century philosophers, superficial manipulators of rhetoric and dialectic...all wearing robes and stuff.

while on the topic, "Sophists" comes from a greek word "sophos. which means clever.
believe it or not, me and a friend had a discussion about this, maybe, a week ago.
