I'm glad that the shroomery has a security section filled with knowledgable people. I recently have become interested in computer security for my PC. What all programs can I download that can increase the security of my computer? I have AVG v7.0 Virus Scanner, my instant messanger is encrypted, I delete my cookies. Are their any other steps or programs I shoud be using? I'd like to be able to delete my files completly from my hard drive. I had one program that did that but I formatted and forgot the name. Any suggestions would be great. I don't have info on my hard drive that is confidential I just want to cover all tracks of websites I've been to and such.

Deleting cookies and your browser cache is a good start. And AVG is a great little AV proggie. I'd recommend a good firewall to add to all that, as well as spyware scanners.

how do you encrypt your IMs? if you're using aimencrypt, thats just a sense of false security. use http://gaim.sourceforge.net w/ an encryption plugin or http://www.trillian.cc trillian pro.

security programs worth using (for win32):

http://axcrypt.sourceforge.net :: file encryption
http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost :: one of the best software firewalls around
http://www.agnitum.com/products/tauscan :: excellent trojan scanner
http://m0n0.ch/wall :: freeBSD hardware (an old computer) firewall
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=7
:: great HOSTS filelist

also from bluetack, use protowall + blocklist manager if you use p2p programs.

http://www.lavasoftusa.com :: ad-aware personal
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html :: spybot

do not use IE, use:

http://www.mozilla.org :: home of most excellent firefox browser
http://www.opera.com :: home of the opera browser

and every windows user should have a copy of a live linux distro just in case windows wont boot or whatever (and also to try linux). http://www.knoppix.org is a good one to try.

i recently watched a news thingy about cops breaking open hard drives and they were saying there is really no way to clean your hard drive...they can get everything anyway...i think a good lump hammer is the safest option if you think your pc might incriminate you but i'm no expert
