going shopping :)

hey i was wondering if someone could tell me where i am likely to find finch seed (is this just birdseed?) and wheat straw (in australia):

also, brands of cooir differe here to the states, but as a rule of thumb could i consider a brick sterile if it is plastic sealed? or am i better off sterilising it anyway? this particular brand is used in hydroponic plant systems, and says it has "anti-fungal" properties...

L:ocal hardware stores should carry finch. Always sterilize everthing, also anything anti-fungal will hinder growth of mushrooms which are a fungus....

Going crazy will drive you mad, but once you get there the rest is easy.....

ok i will try the hardware stores.. what exactly is finch seed tho?

and yeh i know mushrooms are a fungus, i was hoping maybe they meant acteria/mould as they would seem more likely to grow in a hydro system than fungus...

so could i still use it or not?

Wheat straw is probably the most common straw grown in the world, however any cereal straw will serve the purpose. I go out to the farmers and look for big piles of straw they'll usually give me a bale for a buck if not free. Finch seed is a common wild bird food look in that section of the store. Last but not least sterilization is not neccesarily going to get rid of the antifungal compounds so try it before you buy bulk.

get wild finch seed that is high in millet content. the right kind of millet is small light tan balls. Sometimes you can find bags of just millet, these are good too, the other seeds in wild finch food don't seem to make a difference.
