Ran out of verm!

hey, i just mixed the ingredients for 2 jars just now, and found out that i dont have enough vermiculite to put on top of the substrate! will the cakes be ok if i just skip the part where i put the vermiculite on top, and just put tape over the holes right after innoculation? if i can do this, how much risk am i putting the cakes in by not putting a top vermiculite layer?

you should be ok, sterilize the needle with a flame then shake it before innculating. the biggest problem you will have is that you cant open the holes in your jar incase the growth stalls.

there's got to be some way around that though. If you have a filter disk use that, but I'd assume you would be using it anyway instead of verm. I say order up a few of em and then just cover the holes with that if you have to open them. The holes will be open for a second or two but then they will get some fresh air.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I presume your working area is fairly clean to begin with.

I really don't understand why people put holes in their lids. I just take the lid off, innoculate, put lid back on.
It works for me and as long as your air is clean, it'll work for you too even if you are missing the verm seal..

No doubt Capt! I only put a 1/4" hole in the middle of the lid to exchange air through the filter disc. To innoc.. In a clean environment, take off lid and do the job.
