that box would be huge.. you mean 12"x7"x3" and yeah.. 2 maybe three.. it would help to know if what dimensions those are 12 high? 7" long 3"wide? thats what i'm assuming.. and the 3" wide is kinda narrow for cakes. mine need about 5"

ERM! Sorry i read that wrong. 12" long, 7" wide, 3" deep. Thats kinda shallow. I like to make my substrate layer 3" deep alone. but at 2" deep sub layer with 1/4" layer on bottom and 1/2" layer on top it might work. 3 or 4 cakes i'd say. not to shore though.

Depends if you are talking about crumbling and casing or just birthing in the box. Birthing is probably about 2-3. Crumble and case would depend on how fast you want colonization and how deep the substrate.

well i want to crumble them to about nickle size pieces, or should i make em bigger?
Substrate is 60/40 coir and verm. im figuring about a 1 inch bottom layer than a 1 inch layer of crumbled myc with another inch of substrate over top.
the box is like a shoebox size
I dont want skinny mushies but i dont want real fat ones. I just want average. Average colonization. How does this sound?
Also would it be bad if there was a very thin bottom layer or no bottom layer?

the casing layer should be half or less then the depth of substrate layer. like i said.. 2" substrate layer, 1/4 case on the bottom, 1/2 on the top. two 1" casing layers would leave you with a 1" substrate layer which is tiny and will produce small shrooms, you want AT LEAST 2" imo. 2" is even considered pretty thin.. 4"-5" is more ideal, with straw dung some go 6" and higher even..

Take a look at Gladware containers or aluminum baking containers.

Im gunna have to do some casings when i get home today if i want any by christmas =) so i gotta make use of this for now. im trying to understand this now is the mycelium layer suppost to be thicker than the coir/verm layer? or is it the other way around. sorry if i keep running around in circles im still tryin to understand

Bottom layer=1/4 inch
myc layer= 1.75 inch
Top layer=2 inches

would that be about right?
Thanks for helpin me out.

Your top layer should be more like an inch or less, if your substrate layer is going to be 1.75 inches.

ok so the top layer should be less than the actual myc layer in the middle.

The Bible (TMC) says that the more mushrooms you plan on yielding the deeper your substrate layer and your casing layer should be. The more mushies produced, the more stress on the casing layer and the deeper it should be. Though he says not to exceed a 2" casing layer. I'd go for a 2" substrate layer (or deeper), and somewhere between 1" and 2" for your casing layer. The deeper the substrate layer, the deeper the casing layer.
