Taken from gentoo.org ...

I've never used it. I heard from devcatz in IRC that a noob to linux (like myself) would be completely lost in the installation. I've only used FC2 and am now on Slackware.

No, thats BS. im tired of people saying noobs will be lost in gentoo. once your done installing gentoo you will know so much more about linux than you would have using any other distro for a month, you will no longer be a n00b after the install. and you wont be lost, download and print out the gentoo handbook install guide and do exactly as it says, then your set

I use gentoo on my xbox. I like Mandrake for my desktop and I like it that way :smirk:

And I got what I needed... Its even better then turning all the discs into a DVD, cause now when I do installs I don't have to install flash, Nvidia drivers (always a pain) or any of that crap. It installs it all for me  and I like that.

Gentoo isn't quite the supermagic it's sometimes made out to be, but it's a great distro, and the installation and tinkering is fun. The installation is fairly simple, just follow the instructions, and have a bit of patience if you run into problems. Search the gentoo.org forums, and ask questions there if you can't find your answer.

Everything is compiled from source with compile options set specifically to your computer architecture. It should be one of the fastest distros if you go with a stage 1 install. A warning though; a stage 1 install will take a long ass time. It took me over 24 hours on a P III. In the end I said screw it and installed Debian.

I ordered 10 as well.  5 x86 and 5 64 bit.  I've been getting interested in debian and ubuntu is based off of debian ... so I guess this little offer will push me to go through with trying it out.

I wish VMware was free so I dont have to go through the trouble of setting up a dual boot.  And I wouldn't ever have to shutdown linux
