filtering the air filter
    #3415650 - 11/27/04 11:44 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

im pretty sure i read this somewhere but once again i couldnt find the answer i was looking for..

i dont have a hepa and i will be using bubble wands/air filter for air filtration. my air filter will be in dirty air. isnt there something i can put around the filter to keep out contams or do i absolutely need a hepa filter in the room?

you can make an additional prefilter. Either place the pump inside of a small sterlite container that has some holes in it stuffed with poly fill. or you can go the cannister inline route. Take a film cannister, put some poly fill in it. Cut your tubing where you want a filter and place each in on opposite sides.

ok i think i get it. i know someone made a pictorial of this earlier, but i couldnt find the post. so basically the film canister is just to hold the tubing in place so the polyfil is inbetween the two tubes? is polyfill just cotton balls? or what? can it be found at walmart? and by film canister u mean the little canisters that hold rolls of film right?

polyfill is the substance many pillows are made from. Yes, film cannister, no cotton balls are not good. Polyfill from wally world or any place that sells crafts. You got the idea bro.

my pump has a pimpass filter on it already. then i filter with (thanks to reading this) film canisters. The prepump on mine should be could enough, but poly fill is an add protection, and its probably better this way then shoving it in the tubes.

That's actually a pretty good idea. At least you could get a definate micron rating...

You should be able to find 5 micron fuel filters, which is pretty good. I bet that's better than a box full of Polyfill.

I used a vacuum cleaner bag.. lol

thats exactly what i was referring to hyphae. .5 microns isn't that great, but i dont know how well polyfill works either. All is better than none.

I don't know if this is commonly a problem, but if anyone experiences issues with highly reduced airflow, consider adding another set of filters in paralell to the orriginal set. you can T the line with the first canister (use less polyfil in this one for increased airflow- call it your primary filter) and then run each line through it's own canister or fuel filter.

Also, if you can manage to stuff a little polyfill into the + side of the fuel filter, it will prolong it's life expectancy.

PPS: the in-line filters are designed ONLY for small, air cooled. carburated engines- AKA VW bugs, rabits, Vanimals. if you wanted, you could get a nice big filter for a fuel injected car... when I replaced the filter on my 91 VW jetta, it had a filter simmilar in size to an oil filter but still had fairly small (aka in-line) connections.... but thats kindof overkill.

These polyfil stuffed canisters are not to be packed tight by no means and they do scrub the air quite well and the price makes them even more attractive IMHO. It is also never a bad idea to use h2o2 or iodine in your PMP water as added insurance.

No, not 0.5 microns.. 5.0 microns.

I'm sure there are fuel filters with smaller ratings, maybe you could find one thats 2 microns or smaller. The problem with fuel filters is that, IIRC, they are rated by nominal efficiency, not absolute. If that is the case, it would be 50% of particles at X microns are removed, not 99.97%.

Folks, do not stuff the film canister filters tight! You should notice very little if any reduction in air flow. It's easier to see air flow while bubbling through water. So set up your PMP, put water in it(just water, no perlite/geolite), and then adjust the packing until adding the filter inline doesen't change the way it bubbles. Then you can add the perlite/geolite.
