that little cutie in my avatar had some fleas as the people i got her from had her outdoors so i bought Hartz Flea and Tick Repellent For Cats in a spray bottle from Kash and Karry and applied it to her as per directions. About a half-hour later she was acting real funny and she couldn't walk, whenever she tried to move her extremeties spazed out, couldn't control her bladder, and was trembling uncontrolably. I called posion control and they said take her to the vet immediatly as the product contains organophosphates and causes cholinesterase inhibitation which results in paralysis and in extreme cases death. I took her to an emergency vet and they took care of her for $100, thankfully the Vet was super nice and didn't charge her standard $57 fee for coming in (she was on call) and didn't charge for any of the Injections which would have been another $140. She said organophosphates are a horrible choice for flea control and didn't know why Hartz was still marketing the product. She kept questioning me like "are you sure it was for animals" ect. I'm pretty pissed Hartz sells something so dangerous to animals that less than what they recommend posioned my cat and cost me $100 in vet bills and am going to contact the company but I doubt it will do any good. In short Never use organophosphates on any animal of any kind, read labels well and look up the active ingredients on the internet to see associated problems. Don't assume just because it's sold for animals it's actually safe to use on animals like i did. She's seems to be okay today kinda worn out and was still twitching this morn but is getting better.

ya but i can't afford one, think a lawyer would take the case like they do with accident victims (if they win collect 1/3)? I doubt it. I'd probably feel bad sueing for more than $150 but I probably felt worse when i thought she was gonna die. maybe small claims court...

Well if you decide you won't/can't get a lawyer, at least write a letter/email to the company with a bold, formal "threat" to sue them for the damages [monetarily and emotional] their product has caused, in addition to them advertising and selling a product that causes such harm, and so forth. You just might get lucky and convince them out of compensating you out-of-court for a hefty sum. It may very well be that they actually did stop selling/marketing the product - but the store from which you bought the product from, did not cease to sell such products that were still on display or in the inventory. In this case, it would either the parent-company's fault for not alerting all their retailers of the hazardous contents of the product, or the store's fault for not following safety rules. You could end up saving alot of people's pet's lives by making such a large action. Cause and effect..

Search the internet for similar happenings to other people's pets. It's possible you could get a class action lawsuit against Hartz.

Holy fuck! My roommate bought a bottle of that stuff and has been trying to get me to help her spray our cats. I've been stalling 'cause the cats hate the shit and it just seems wrong to me to spray pesticide directly on them. I'm so glad you posted this when you did.

organophosphates? *shudders* This is a particularly nasty group of chemicals. As you stated, they cause cholinesterase (ChE) inhibition. When you inhibit ChE in the body, acetylcholine begins to build up in the synapse between nerve cells and especially in muscular nerves. Acetylcholine causes nerve cells to fire, so if you have too much acetylcholine or not enough ChE (which breaks down acetylcholine) the nerve cells go into a spasm and just keep firing over and over. Convulsions are one of the first symptoms, and can rapidly lead to death if the exposure was strong enough. Organophosphates are used quite a bit in over-the-counter pesticides. RAID and those kind of things are all organophosphates, last time I checked. Let the little bugs spasm to death! Organophosphates are also the chemicals we now call "weapons of mass destruction". Sarin, tabun, soman, VX...these are all organophosphates. So, I guess, in effect you just used nerve-gas on your cat I'm glad to hear the vet got it all fixed up!

I went through anti-flea medicine problems as well.
When it comes to stuff that you buy in the stores(flea collars, flea sprays, flea shampoos), the stuff DOES NOT WORK. AT ALL. I had a vet tell me this and I saw it happen with my own eyes. I washed my cat with flea shampoo, sprayed him with flea spray, and put a collar on him and he still had ample fleas. The vet also told me that all of those products are very harmful to cats. In fact my vet said that he was surprised that my cat was still alive and healthy.
The only thing that works for fleas is this really expensive liquid that comes in a tiny tube. You cannot get it in a department store...you must buy it from a vet. There are several brands out there, but the brand I use is called "Revolution". Once a month you open up a little squeeze-tube and put all of the liquid in it on your cat's neck(you have to part the hair so the liquid touches the skin). Every little tube has about six or seven drops in it. These little tubes cost $12 a piece(I am not shitting you). It is expensive, but it is worth it. This stuff takes care of fleas, round worms, flat worms, heartworms, ear mites, and ticks. Within a few days my cat had no fleas and has not had one since(and he goes outside every day). The shit is expensive but it is worth every penny, trust me.
All of that anti-flea garbage in the stores is poison and it doesn't work!! I don't understand how they can be allowed to sell that stuff.

Yeah, I use something similar to that on my dog. I think it's called frontline or something. You just put 2 drops on the skin at the base of the neck, once per month. It actually gets in the dogs bloodstream or something. It's safe for dogs but I've heard that it can be harmful to cats, just as many flea/tick repelants are.
Sorry to hear about your ordeal. Hope the cat gets well soon.

the cat stoped twitching and seems pretty normal but still not as much energy as normal she'll be fine though.
Phychotron the bottle said it's okay to use on cats 13 weeks and up and she's ~20 weeks, i used less than was recommended and it even said use more for long hair cats! That pic is from when i first got her.
RandalFlagg This stuff did kill all the flea's, almost took the cat with them though. She's an indoor cat and had fleas when i got her because she was kept outside, hopefully they won't come back so i don't have to buy the stuff from the vet.
Skorpivo thanks for the idea's. I like the letter one, writing is much more effective than calling usually.

I'm sorry to hear that man, it is temporary, she'll be fine like you said Nothing is sadder than a defenseless animal suffering
Its pretty well known among vets and breeders that frontline and hartz stuff is shit. My vet only recommends it for use on large, healthy >100lb dogs.
Advantage is all I use. Its really expensive but it won't harm your animal. Its relatively safe and in my experience is the only formula that works consistenly for indoor flea control. Its safe to use the cat formula in small doses on other small animals like rabbits, so small kittens should be no problem.
