Casing...?
    #3415711 - 11/27/04 02:03 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

So i made up a straight 100% verm casing a couple days ago with a single PF jar in one of those little gladware containers. I misted it down really well then covered it with the lid and put it back in the incubator.(i didn't poke holes in the lid...bad idea?) So now I take it out like 4 days later to see the crumbled layer having little to no new myc growth and none of it coming through the casing layer at all. The casing itself smells a little like fermentation, is that due to the stagnation of the air or is it spent?

Lemme know your thoughts, it doesn't matter either way, so don't feel bad to break my heart.

Thanks.

Your guess is as good as mine, maybe worse then others. Is there a possible contamination prior to the casing incubation? Air exchange is important, but where did you get the idea to incubate it for 4 days...3 is alot, sometimes I dont incubate at all.

I could have sworn i read 3-5 days of incubation in one of the teks. Maybe i'm just retarded and should have followed the tek better.

Should i just get it fruiting? It is possible to have prior contam due to it being microwave sterilized and having it dry out prior to 100% colonization. I cut out the uncolonized then crumbled the rest and cased.

Time to try again?

EDIT: found where i read 3-5 days:

I dont support verm only casings, use coir, you wont need to adjust the ph or anything. IF I was going to case with straight anything Id use coir over verm, but 30% verm does very well for grains, and I would think itd be the same for pf jars.

i've had poor luck with straight verm casings on PF jars.

as soon as i switched to 70/30 coir/verm, i had great success.

also, i incubate all of my casings and patch.
