pins and needles...

you know the numb feeling when your hand, foot, etc. falls asleep? Well I've been getting it a lot when I sleep at night. I wake up completely unable to control my arm and hand. It happes on both sides, but usually not at the same time. I end up having to massage my numb arm to get it to wake up. Anyone know what causes this and what could cause it to begin to happen more frequently? Its kinda driving me nutzoid.

I know that it can happen from restricting blood flow to a limb, either by gravity or pressure, but the thing is that it happens while I'm awake sometimes, even if I'm layin on my back it happens. It seems to have started when I began lifting weights a while back. I dont work out like some crazy muscle head or anything. Just improving my upper body strength so climbing and stuff is a little less arduous.

hmm, sure sounds like a pinched nerve. This happens to me alot, i know why tho. For me, I have secondary osteoperrosis in my back, and sometimes a nerve will "hang up" on a rough bone surface. I manage with a specialist from time to time. If it gets real bad, you might consider getting it checked.

Sometimes I wake up, and I wont be able to feel one of my arms at all.
I just change possitions, so it has blood flow, and after a minute or two it goes back to normal.

That's fairly normal when you're sleeping.. it's just your bodies way of saying wake up and change positions. Maybe you are just in the habit of sleeping in weird positions.. try sleeping flat on your back with a pillow under your knees or if on your stomach a pillow under there.. it sound weird but it's pretty comfortable and it promotes a healthy back and blood circulation. Also you said you started lifting weights a while back.. have you been getting good cardio and doing lots of stretching? If not, that would probably help greatly. Run and stuff. Also you should intake some cayenne pepper regularly in some form, as it is very good for blood circulation and also aids digestion and stuff. Also ginkgo biloba.

thanks for the quick replies everyone. Im pretty sure its not pinched nerves though, its happened before and it hurts like hell. No pain envolved in this. Shroomism, thanks for the great advice. My bike broke down shortly after starting to work out and Im sure Im not getting enough cardio now, especially since Im a smoker. I think that Ill get back on the cardio bit and maybe try the cayanne pepper... I do so love the cajun cook. "just adda litta cay-annnnnnne pey-pa..."

Quote:
Paresthesia is a term that refers to an abnormal burning or prickling sensation which is generally felt in the hands, arms, legs, or feet, but may occur in any part of the body. The sensation, which arises spontaneously without apparent stimulus and is usually not painful, may also be described as tingling or numbness, skin crawling, buzzing, or itching. Most people have experienced transient (temporary) paresthesia at some time in their lives; it occurs whenever inadvertent pressure is placed on a nerve and causes what many describe as a "pins and needles" feeling. The feeling quickly goes away once the pressure is relieved. For some people, however, paresthesia can become a chronic condition caused by an underlying disorder .
Quote:
Parethesias with simple causes such as pressing on a nerve are usually reversible. Certain other nerve conditions such as peripheral neuropathy (often from diabetes), lupus complications, Guillain-Barre syndrome, or multiple sclerosis are also possible causes of parethesias. Because of the variety of possible causes, any abnormal sensation needs prompt professional medical investigation.
