Popcorn not colonizing on bottom of jars
    #3415101 - 11/27/04 06:30 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

My friend's popcorn jars are not colonizing on the bottom. Its been ten days since he nocked up a couple of quart jars with EQ's. At day 6, he gave em all a shake. They really took off after that except the very bottom. Its only the bottom most layer(about 2 kernals high). He just added a tee-shirt to the incubator floor in case it was too warm. He's been keeping them at 84-85F. There is no standing water so he guesses its the temp or maybe not enough gas exchanging on bottom. He is using Tyvek for filters under the jar lids. Wants to know if it is safe to flip jars over to get the bottom going. Read that you shouldn't get Tyvek too wet or it could contam. Any expert advise?

try flipping them over. give them a lttle tap on the bottom so the bottom of the substrate isnt touching the jar. the last 10% takes forever it seems. then place them down on the lids.

I tilt my jars when they don't seem to be colonizing at the bottom. I also use a heaping tablespoon of verm in the bottom of the jars to help control moisture when I am making up the jars.

Hej Lemon my name aint toad but as far as I know the verm in the bottom is used to keep the bottom dry, since some jars are too wet the water slips to the bottom but now there the verm waits for the water sucking it up...
