A Trans-Atlantic Subway?
    #3413803 - 11/26/04 10:36 PM (12 years, 14 days ago)

I saw this thing on the discovery channel about an underwater train going from New York to the UK. They've got this whole thing figured out, how they are going to do it, and funding and everything.

This is going to be the fastet motherfucking space age transit system to hit planet earth since EVER. It works almost like an electric hovercraft moving across the bottom of the ocean at hundreds of miles per second. Literally.

The only problem that I can see with the whole thing is that if anything went wrong and that train went through the walls of the tunnel, or the pressure of the entire ocean above crushed a weak panel, every single person inside would be vaporized. Poof. Space age Titanic?

Has anyone seen this special? It's fucking nuts what we are capable of.

I didnt see the special, but Im sure the thing wont be able to go that fast. Maybe by time they get the tube built they figure theyll have the technology to go that fast. Its gonna take like 50-100 years to build that thing. The Big Dig in Boston took nearly 20 years to complete, how long do you think it will take to span an ocean?

wow! that is amazing.

hmm 100 miles a second is like 360,000 miles per hour!

the speed of sound is 761 miles per hour.

me thinks typo too

I think this would be a cool idea, except for the fact that people like to destroy things in the name of whatever they want.  its too easy of a target.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.---senior doobie

I saw that special and they were talking about the max speed would be about 5000 miles per hour. They are goign to propel it with a vacuum, like how those tubes at the bank work, only it's a big ass train, not a little tube with your roll of quarters in it.

How will they fund it? I hope they don't use our tax money for that bullshit.

This is just in the speculative stage. The problems they will encounter building it have to be considered. Theories abound on how it could be done, but not saying if it ever will be. The show never gave a conclusion whether it will be done.

Aparently, (I could be wrong) but I think the idea was that total time to get from NYC to the UK was a travel time of about half an hour.

That is way fast. Like sonic speed. The technology to get this project off the ground is still being developed and it's mostly just ideas.

I think it's absoloutly amazing that we live in a time where something this incredible is thisclose to being a reality. If this thing wasn't underwater, I bet you could see it from the moon.

Beware the machines.

I think if this project ever came into fruition that there would be an accident. It's far to big for our time. People would die and the whole thing will be left to crumble and decompose in the ocean like the Titanic.

Or it would be the hugest engineering feat mankind has ever accomplished. Where would we go from there?

Or, making one that goes to the moon.

But probably destroying the world.
