Why do poppies like companionship + can you use spent pods?
    #3413702 - 11/26/04 10:05 PM (12 years, 15 days ago)

http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/opiates/opiates_faq.shtml

"Poppies DO like a bit of companionship, so thin around a clump of 2-3 strong plants"

And I also remember reading in a thread where someone likes to group there poppies in 3's and have a foot between groups. I was just wondering why poppies like companionship. It would seem like it would just cause competition between the plants. Has anyone noticed this to be detrimental to the growth of their poppies, or has it help?

Edit: I was just wondering about poppy tea, if you cut the pod and collect the latex, can you still use the spent pod and use it to make tea?

Double Edit: "You can reslice yesterdays pods if you choose to keep them, though I've found the best way to increase yields is to remove spent flowerheads at the base of the main stem or where the flower stem joins to a larger branch- this encourages new flowers to form"

So basically cut the base stem so the plant will re-grow it's stem and pod again? I wouldn't think the plant would have enough time to grow back and produce enough latex for it to be worth while.

That's interesting, I'd like to hear some opinions. I always thin mine out to single plants and give about 6 inches between each.

Ive read that if you thin them to 4-6" it increases the potency because it stresses them a bit.

I too am very interested in this, because I have gotten very different answers.  Some say group, some say don't group...

:whack:

Anyone out there care to shed a little light on this subject?

I'm just trying to save space by adding this question in, but have any of you grown them in pots?

I've used spent pods for tea, it was still active.

Cutting off the entire flower stalk has never produced a new pod flower for me ever. Only time i got more than one pod was when it produced multiple pods at once, never had it flower again by growing a new bolt with a pod.

How did you have your poppy plants spread out? I might go with that thinning them so there is 6 inches between each plant.

Oh I know, I just don't want so much competition that my plants are small and weak, instead of big and beautiful. What do you mean by broadcasted?

Like put them in your hand and throw them into the plot, or mix the seeds with some sand and throw them into the plot, scatter them basically. The sand trick usually gets some good spacing.
